Steps to reproduce:

  • install the last update
  • open orion
  • dialog "do you want to watch intro video" interrupts application startup
  • Safari does not exhibit this behavior

Expected behavior:

  • launch the app
  • displays my selected home / start page
  • no interruptions

Orion, OS version; hardware type:

  • Orion: Version 0.99.115-beta (WebKit 614.1.12)
  • MacOS Monterey, M1, Version 12.4

Image/Video:
Only occurs on first launch after the update. I am not going to un/re-install just for a video.

PLEASE do not normalize popups, interruptions, ads, announcements, etc. This is one of the main reasons I have switched away from Firefox. I already searched out and chose to install this browser. I don't need or want to see any additional promotional material.
If I am interested in the latest features / changes, I will go to your website and check.

bluedaisy changed the title to "Intro video" interruption on first run after latest update .

bluedaisy The video is meant to be shown only on browser's first run ever. We just added it few weeks ago and wanted to show it to existing users. Many users found the prompt to be a polite way to do so.

I understand, and appreciate the pop-up instead of autoplaying a video. This "bug report" was more of a request:

PLEASE do not normalize popups, interruptions, ads, announcements, etc.

Not sure what do you mean by that, please clarify. Also your username is confusing and you should probably change it.

What i mean by that is a request to the Orion developers to refrain from thinking that it is acceptable to pop up feature advertisements / intro videos / anything that takes my attention away from what I expected to be doing when I opened the browser. The frequent extra windows / tabs / notifications that Firefox throws at me whenever they think I need to know about their latest feature is the major reason I started looking for an alternate browser.

As for the username, I use this account to give feedback on Orion. Hence: orionfeedback. I don't understand what is confusing about it. I checked my profile page. I don't see an option to change the name.

bluedaisy It is acceptable because we politelty ask the user whether they want to see it, we do not play it autoamtically (which would be unacceptable). 99.99% of users love the video and if you do not want to be interrupted you just need to click no that one time.

I'll change the handle to something less confusing let me knowif you want a different handle.

It seems like your mind is already made up on this issue, but I'm just chiming in to agree with @bluedaisy.

I found the intro video interruption to be unnecessary and annoying. I know you're offering it as an option, but why? What does it add for the user? It seems cheesy and makes me think less of the project if I'm being completely honest. The idea of making a flashy intro video that has zero function goes against all your stated goals on your website, or at the very least does not meet those standards.

                1. It's not fast. It interrupts me.
                2. It's not lightweight. It adds an unnecessary step to the user experience.
                3. It does not add to my web browsing performance.
                4. It does not add to my web browsing protection and privacy.

If you are insistent on offering the option of watching the intro video, please be more clear in the prompt about what it is you're asking people for permission to watch. When I read "intro video" I thought it might be a primer on Orion's features and how to use it. A superflous animated video was not what I was expecting at all.

Orb Thanks. Please suggest exactly how do we change the text to align the expcetations.
