Profiles like Chromium browsers
- Edited
We are starting to work on this feature.
Can you confirm that profiles are completely independant from one another and do not share
- History
- Bookmarks
- Extensions
- Settings
- Passwords
Meaning each profile has its own data?
Is the expectation these would be mirrored in the same way on mobile?

Hi Vlad, for me personally, having this kind of strict separation is exactly what I would want. I want a way to clearly separate different browser use cases, e.g. for Personal use and Work, so a clear separation is necessary. Its also what Chromium-based Browsers do, which is what this issue is initially based on as far as I know?
Would also be cool to have on mobile, but for me this would not be a priority. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not know any iOS browser that supports this kind of feature? Would be an advantage, but not a necessity, as I wouldnt expect as many people to be that heavy users of browsers on iPhones. Might be more useful on iPad than on iPhone after all.
PS: sent a few bucks to sponsor this feature, hope it helps a little
How important is that windows from multiple profiles can be open at the same time?
This presents huge challenges, for example dragging a tab from one to another profile would be very problematic as they dont share the same webkit sessions, cookies, cache etc...
Vlad I do think this is very important! I usually always have my private browsing open and dont really want to close that while using a work profile or similar. I often even have my work email in a browser (usually Microsoft Edge) in the background while using my main Orion for other stuff. So yes, this is important.
But I dont necessarily need to drag tabs arount between sessions. I don't think I have ever even tried doing that in other browsers. Having multiple instances without actually needing multiple browsers running at the same time already helps a ton.
Just tried it: for me, moving tabs between profile sessions does not work either.
Vlad I second gitarero164 's comment.
I tend to have multiple profiles open, they each have their usecases, but it lets me easily have multiple browsers open with their own cache, history, extensions, settings and sessions. Ideal for private, work, etc profiles.
As for the 'dragging a tab from one session to another' discussion. I think that it should stay as it is in chrome (as in: you may not drag a tab from profile a to profile b)
Sharing first ideas about implementing profiles in Orion

Vlad FWIW, I like all of these options, a small addition I would propose, is to have an option for your entire browser window to match the chosen profile color. It helps differentiate the profiles from one another.
Additionally, I want to highlight that I currently use brave with multiple profiles, one of them is my ‘default’ profile, the rest are specialized.
In order to open a link in a different profile, I use an app called velja, that acts as a default browser (hotkey + click on link lets you chose different browsers/browser profiles).
All of this to say that I would like orion profiles to work with tools like velja in order to let users open links in their chosen browser and or profile.
LoudSoftware Yup, I have Velja too, support for that would be cool. Not a priority, but cool.
Vlad that looks really nice! those snapshots (assuming they work like I'd assume) sound amazing too, I dont think I have seen something like that yet?

gitarero164 Snapshot will allow you take a snapsnot of all windows/tabs in your profile in a point of time and later restore it (with automatic snapshots every X available too). When Orion does things we always strive for better than current best
Vlad Love that feature and that attitude!
+1 I absolutely love Orion. All it needs is a Chromium-like profiles feature and I'm deleting all my other browsers!

Well, glad we closed this one
Vlad
Thank you. Read to test this now.
Found some bugs. The profile list is not updating across profiles. Here is a video:
