  • Link Preview doesn't open the preview window (Sequoia Beta, 0.99.128.1.1-beta)

  • BugsDesktopDone

When I click any links in Discord or my Email app I usually get the Orion Preview and can "maximize" it to shift it into the browser if I want.
Now, with the latest Orion and MacOS I don't get the Preview window coming up. I can press shift and click to get the normal browser tab.
I disabled the Preview function in Orion settings for the time being.

I get the preview myself (i.e. opening from GitHub). I love this new feature, but wish I could select which profile the tab opens in from the preview page.

I am seeing this behavior with Orion Version 0.99.130.1-beta (WebKit 621.1.2.111.4) and Sequoia 15.2. When I click an external link, Orion tries to open it as a new tab in the last used Orion window. I have tried this with and without shift. I do have link previews enabled in settings.

Preview is also failing when using the Open Link in Preview Window from the context menu in the browser. When using this option, I typically see what looks like a brief flash of the browser window and then nothing more. In some cases, a visual artifact is also left behind, as shown in the attached image.

I have seen preview work as expected in a browser window a of couple of times today, but that amounts to only a few percent of the preview attempts.

I am using the default profile with no browser instances open for my other profiles.

Happy to provide additional information and further testing if needed.

deconvolved I am not reproducing this. On what sites do you find the preview is appearing like this, and are there any settings or personal monitor or Spaces setup that cause the issue from your end?

astruckm This issue does not appear to be site related. I have seen it on many sites, including Kagi's help site and Orion's feedback page.

My usual setup includes two monitors: a MacBook Pro display and an external Studio Display. I don't see any change in behavior when closing the MacBook Pro display. I am still seeing the issue with the configuration simplified down to one display with a single Space. I have been toying with Stage Manager a bit, but the problem still occurs if I turn it off.

I have tried restarting Orion to no effect. I have tried shutting down all foreground apps to no effect. I have tried disabling all Orion extensions to no effect.

However I did perhaps find something a little more interesting while doing a last bit testing. This problem is currently occurring only with my default profile. If I switch to either of the other two I have set up, both external links and Open Link in Preview Window behave as expected. I tried removing all windows from my default profile, but the problem persists in that profile.

I spent some more time poking at this, and it looks like there are perhaps three different issues involved, all affecting preview functionality.

          1. The preview failure that included the artifact shown in the earlier screenshot appears to be due to some sort of corruption of the Orion support files. I tried removing com.kagi.kagimacOS.plist from Preferences and restarting Orion. After that I was still seeing preview failures in some cases, but the artifact was no longer present. I tried running a restore of the the relevant files in Preferences and Application Support, and the artifact returned. I then reset everything using Reset Orion..., reconfigured, and I haven't seen the artifact since. Before doing this, attempts to open a preview window from within the browser always failed.

          2. The problem with opening external links in preview mode appears to be a Stage Manager issue. Once I resolved 1, it became clear that opening external links with Stage Manager active consistently resulted in a tab being opened instead of a preview. As soon as I turned off Stage Manager, all external links began opening in preview mode as expected.

          3. After working through 1 and 2, I was still seeing occasional failures of Open Link in Preview Window. I think this one may also be related to Stage Manager. If the option is used carefully, a preview window does open as expected; however in some cases, it results in a quick flash of the preview window that then goes away. Once this happens, Open Link in Preview Window no longer works. It results in a quick flicker and nothing more. It seems that if anything interrupts the opening of the preview window (e.g. a stray tap while opening), it closes and will no longer open. Either switching Stage Manager off for a few seconds and on again or restarting the browser resolves this issue until the next time it occurs. I was able to create the failure with some consistency when Stage Manager was active and unable to do so when inactive.

deconvolved Thank you for those helpful details. We will look into the issues relating to the application files and a disfigured preview opened from external apps relating to Stage Manager.

I'm seeing the exact same issue as @astruckm on Mac OS Sequoia 15.2:

I've turned off link previews for now. Happy to provide more debug information

Can reproduce this on version 0.99.131.0.2-beta.

This issue is not "Done". It has been broken for months now. Currently reproducable for every preview link on:

                  Version 0.99.131.0.2-beta (WebKit 621.1.2.111.4)
                  Build date Mar 11 2025
