  • High memory usage, battery usage and strange behaviour on Tabs and Extensions

  • BugsDesktopDone

What happened? How did it happen? What are the steps to replicate the issue.
In short, I do not know exactly what is happening, nor have the steps to reproduce but will provide as much info as possible, and link related issues below.

Orion starts using a lot of memory (probably memory leak somewhere). My completely wild guess without looking at code is in the Tab management part of Orion (e.g. sending tabs/trees across windows). Because that was what I was doing before it started behaving stragely.

Memory:

High memory usage, especially for what I had, most of windows where suspended, tabs too. I counted:

2 profiles:
	Profile 1:
		10 windows:
1st window (General, uncategorised default tab):
				35 tabs - 5 open - 30 suspended
2nd window suspended, but 4 tabs - all suspended
3rd window suspended, but 5 tabs - all suspended
4th window suspended, but 6 tabs - all suspended
5th window suspended, but 5 tabs - all suspended
6th window suspended, but 2 tabs - all suspended
7th window suspended, but 9 tabs - all suspended
8th window suspended, but 5 tabs - all suspended
			9st window:
				35 tabs - 9 open - 30 suspended
	Profile 2:
		1 window, 1 tab

Battery:
When this was happening I got a warning saying Orion was using too much battery.

Extensions:
Opening BitWarden pop-up was really slow (taking seconds to open) when this was happening.

Tabs/Trees:
Opening Trees was showing different tree tabs, and some tabs did not open at all (one disappeared).
I will share a video of the strange Tree/Tab behaviour with David via discord.

Possibly related bugs/issues:

Orion so far is amazing. It is everything I tried to make Firefox with vertical and nested tabs some years ago, but much better. Thank you ❤️

What did you expect to happen? Describe the desired functionality.
Low battery usage, lower memory usage and tabs/trees behaving as supposed.

What version of Orion are you running?
Version 0.99.125-beta (WebKit 616.1.22)

mig4ng Steps to reproduce please with comparison with Safari every steo along the way. Use a new clean orion profile. Almost every single cited report turned out to be false alarm at the end. Your screenshot doe snot indicate anything special, just a bunch of open tabs.

With over 2000 issues open we can not assign resources to hunt this in the dark.

Is there a way of enabling debug mode on the browser so it records everything it does?

That way I could have it enabled and whenever it happens again I will just look at that log or share the log with you and understand what is going on.

mig4ng No, as so many things can contribute to this. Starting from a new clean orion profile, mark the steps you take and memory usage, then caompare it with Safari. If you see anything radically different, notify us here.

          @mig4ng

This will propably be a bit easier to tell whats going on in next release, as you will be able to see tab name in Activity monitor, instead of Orion Web Content

Longely and Vlad Thanks for the tips. I will wait for the next release and then have those extra tools for it. For now quiting and reopening Orion is working and I don't have time or steps to reproduce it at the moment.

Feel free to close/suspend the bug report, and I will reopen one or this one when I have more info.
            Have an amazing day.
