Bug Report

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install an extension that has a separate window upon clicking the icon, say Bitwarden
  2. Hide toolbar in fullscreen.
  3. Try clicking the icon.
  4. This is what happens -
4.1 toolbar auto-unhides, showing all extension icons, address bar, etc
4.2 the window for the extension opens as it should
4.3 after a few seconds, toolbar autohides
4.4 along with that the top of the extension window also goes into hiding beyond the screen

Expected behavior:
Instead of 4.4 above, the extension window should start at the top of the screen

macOS:
M1 Air, Big Sur 11.6 (20G165)

Image/Video:

Default behaviour of the extension window when toolbar is visible

Extension window top hidden when toolbar autohides

Turns out same is for any external window, like Privacy or Website Settings windows and not limited to extensions.

DoD Instead of 4.4 above, the extension window should start at the top of the screen

@Vlad The proposed changes by DoD seem to fix the issue alright, but I feel like it adds some complexity

Instead, I have another idea. I noticed that when the share button is clicked in the toolbar or when the named windows list is shown, the new window stays open along with the toolbar no matter where you move your mouse. I wonder if this behavior could be extended to extension popups, downloads menu, website settings, privacy report and any other such pop-ups as well. Also, I think as it has already been implemented, it might be a relatively easier fix

    • Vlad replied to this.

Shadowknight I am bit lost. Website settings behaves in the same way as share popup when you move mouse away. Am I missing something? What is exactly the ask?

Vlad You need to be in full-screen mode to see it happen. I will upload a video about this soon

Vlad As you can see here, everything except the share menu (first) and named windows menu (last) show this buggy behaviour

EDIT: I don't have the downloads menu rn and hence it is not in the video, but that shows this buggy behaviour too

I believe this is default macOS behavior and Safari does the same ?

Vlad Yes, looks like Safari indeed does it, but this is one of those cases where that should not hold us back. The hiding of top part of pop-ups makes it especially difficult to work with extensions. Also, this issue is just exacerbated with bookmarks bar turned on (Cmd+Shift+B).

Safari has less extensiosn support, so this issue might not show up often. Also, Safari has "Always Hide Toolbar in Full Screen" off by default, and I didn't even know it existed, so I never used it. Orion, otoh, has "Always Hide Toolbar in Full Screen" on by default, hence more users noticing it. Given this and the higher number of extensions on Orion, I can see this issue being a major hindrance if unresolved just cause "that's what Safari does"

i believe that this issue is fixed, because the toolbar just stays open when any popup is open
