  • Less of a feature, more of a question: How isolated are Orion Profiles?

  • HelpDone

In Chrome, or in most chromium browsers, the profiles are not fully isolated from each other, like they can share cookies from time to time, and I started thinking about how Orion's profiles work as well, since they seem to install another Orion app, so does that mean that they don't share anything, and are completeley seaparate?

Thank You, I'm glad to know that because I want to use one profile for school and they require a couple trackers to be used when taking tests.

        Hi, eirk

Sorry from bringing up the old post.
The following document will highlight some profile limitations in Google Chrome:
        https://www.chromium.org/user-experience/multi-profiles/

        1. Data Mixing: When switching between accounts, bookmarks and settings from all previously synced accounts may remain accessible. This can lead to unwanted mixing of data across different user profiles, as the current binary sync model does not effectively isolate user data.

        2. Privacy Concerns: All user data is tied to a single operating system identity, meaning there is no enhanced privacy or encryption for user data directories. As a result, passwords stored in the system's keychain can potentially be accessed by other users on the same machine.

        3. Background Apps and Extensions: Chrome will load all extensions for all accounts upon launch, regardless of which user is currently logged in. This means that background apps associated with one user can be managed by another user without needing to switch accounts, which could lead to security or privacy issues.

        4. Incognito Mode Limitations: Each account has its own incognito mode that inherits settings from the active window. However, this could confuse users regarding the privacy of their activities since incognito windows will still display the associated account name.

        5. User Interface Challenges: While there are visual indicators to show which profile is active, managing multiple identities can still be cumbersome. Users may find it challenging to keep track of which profile they are using at any given time due to the need for clear visual tags.

          1. this is only for syncing of bookmarks and settings only (not cookies, website data), and it only is when you enable/disable sync to your google account, or switch google accounts. this isn't applicable to orion, as sync for orion is tied to your apple account only.

          2. orion saves passwords to keychain, which requires the user's own password to unlock

          3. not too sure about this

          4. not really applicable. orion incognito doesn't share data with anything else so it shouldnt be a problem

          5. just a UI issue

Any plans to implement something similar to the Firefox Containers? Many times Profiles are too heavy to set up, e.g. when you just want to log in to the same service with multiple accounts (e.g. multiple Gmail accounts).

One good Firefox extension to use as inspiration: Container Tab Groups
