Interestingly, Safari Tech Preview seems to work fine with WebM, and signals support for it.
Release Safari claims it can't play WebM, but the playback actually seems to work anyway.
Both WebM-related experimental options are enabled in Orion by default as far as I can see, but doesn't seem to have any impact.
Steps to reproduce:
Go to https://www.webmproject.org/detect/
WebM video will not play (in normal and compatibility mode)
Expected behavior:
WebM video plays. In Safari 15.2, even though the site responds that the video will not play, it does work.
Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Orion Version 0.99.110-beta (WebKit 613.1.12)
MacOS 12.1
MacBook Pro (M1 Pro)
Image/Video:
Left Safari, right Orion.
Even more strange is that regular Safari play the video.
We have an update from WebKit team
Unfortunately the CoreMedia feature WebKit uses to add WebM support is disabled unless the framework is signed with an entitlement we can't use in open source builds.

It is not clear why is Apple not allowing WebM for open source WebKit. Please feel free to post for clarification in WebKit.
Is there any update on this? Safari plays webms perfectly now.
theblackdragon See discussion here and ask for support in open source WebKit https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249982#c2
Orion version 0.99.126.4.1.3-rc (WebKit 618.1.7) now correctly plays WebM videos:

laiz Not for me on the Mojave version of 0.99.126.4.1.3-rc it seems:
Sorry. Your browser reports that it cannot play WebM Video. The browser responded with:
- canPlayType supported? No
- WebM video supported? N/A
orionuser6651 webm support is handled on the macOS level, so Orion will support it where available
