Unless I've missed something, there's currently no immediate way to identify when a site's using custom "Website settings" — instead I've got to expand the Gear menu (or select Orion > Settings for X)

Could a small badge (top right dot) be added to the Gear icon as a signifier that "something's different with this site"…? Unfortunately, unlike the Star icon (for Bookmarks) there's no filled, or any other type, of alternative for the "gear" SF Symbol. 🤔

A single UI convention for toggle-state Toolbar Icons would be preferable, of course, but that's further complicated by the state when the Gear button is hidden… so would it instead make sense for Website settings to live within the Address Bar, just as Reload and soon Zoom will?

Perhaps that last point should be it's own suggestion…? 🤔

Arguably the purple highlight used on the Privacy toolbar icon might be said convention, but given you've not used that same style when filling the Star icon, I guess maybe you're trying to retain the purple highlight specifically to highlight Orion's Privacy benefits?

That also stands to reason given the purple echos the app icon branding.

Nonetheless it seems to me a good opportunity to adopt "purple" as your consistent UI convention for an actively toggled on feature.

transeunt Check this discussion here - it seems the two could be merged

We are open to an indicator on gear icon. Please provide a specific recommendation.

I think it is going to be tricky to have an indicator on gear icon and then no indicator on what option is actually changed. Which could lead down the rabbit hole described here https://orionfeedback.org/d/760-compatibility-mode-indicator-icon-or-tab-styling/9

Just replying here as I'd still suggest also considering whether the purple colour could be added as part of these conventions? i.e.

        • Swap Star to filled and purple for a bookmarked page
        • Badge Gear and set both icon and badge to purple for custom Website Settings
        • Badge Privacy setting by default and set both to purple when trackers blocked
        • Badge Downloads and set both to purple for new downloads (arguably red implies more urgency that required)

You'd then have a nicely consistent convention for these more advanced toggle / button functions.

If blending of the base icon and badge were a risk, then I'd just not recolour the badge, but keep swapping the base to purple to consistently indicate they're in a different ('special') state.

transeunt I like the suggestion. Can you create a new issue for this and add a mockup of all of them turned on if you are able to? (main purpose would be to to see if we would not get carried away with putple too much)

Vlad This post should be marked as done, because the suggestion was completed within the related thread.
