  • I use Safari and Orion regularly for comparison. I find myself gravitating back to Safari for the more compact tab structure and colored tab. I really hope this gets implemented.

  • CORRECTION: I just noticed the Zotero pop up box is capturing all the results but they appear to be in random order. I can't distinguish what the order is, but my pages display 20 results, so it's time consuming to search for the result I'm looking for using the extension.

    • Zotero doesn't capture all results. See how the results do not match up to the items on the page. This is consistent no matter what search terms I use.

Also, minor, maybe separate issue, but clicking cancel on the pop up extension box only makes it reappear. You must hit the red X for it to close.

I expected it to capture the correct results on the page like this one in Safari

      Version 0.99.126.2-beta (WebKit 618.1.2)

      Sonoma (14)

      • Bumping this too. I totally depend on Zotero for work. I was thinking of making Orion my go-to work browser given its speed and distraction-free minimalism. I'll be patient and check back next month. 😉

        • Vlad You know, I never noticed it doesn't say "private." I look for color cues. Here is what a new tab page looks like for me.
And this is what a private tab looks like for me

Very slight color difference at the top. Also "search or enter website name appears twice. I've seen this before. Figured it was just a minor bug, not worth reporting, but seems it only appears in private mode, not non-private. I can't remember if that was always the case.

Also, if window is not maximized, the words run over each other, like this

          • Vlad Ahh that would explain why I didn't notice I was in private mode as I have my start page set to open to an empty page. I guess I haven't used Private mode in Safari long enough to notice the similarities.

            • Vlad I just did. It got much worse. See video. This is recorded with a QuickTime screen video on M1 iMac. Safari on the left. Orion on the right. Safari is smoother than appears with this refresh rate. Orion is jumpier after this update. It's even jumping using the Magic Trackpad now. Before that wasn't the case. The trackpad was smooth.

Again, this scrolling is with Logitech Anywhere 3 mouse on M1 iMac.

            • chase Unfortunately, no. I just tested it and nothing shows. Not sure why. I'm not getting the black tabs I was getting before, just nothing. It's marked as under review, so IDK

              • Vlad I think a little color is always nice, like the purple on this page. Brave has the most visually aesthetic private mode I've seen, but it may not be for everyone. I like minimalism, but a little color is cool, IMO.

There have been times I was in private mode with Orion and didn't realize it. I think with heavy usage it become clearer, but it's not intuitive at first, unless looking for changes.

                • Brave has a nice solution. Fully history shows chronological history on all devices, but there are tabs of your other devices to the left you can click to only show history on those specific devices. So if, say, you remember running across an article on a certain device, you can search for it on that device only. It therefore allows you to clear history on a single device only while still being synced.

                    Here is Brave from brave://extensions/shortcuts
Came here to suggest keyboard shortcuts to activate extensions. Love the minimalist look of an empty toolbar. I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts to activate everything.

Safari, by default, doesn't have them, I believe, but Chromium-based browsers do. This would be an awesome addition.

                    • Vlad Will do. FYI, I didn't think to record in slow motion, which better captures the jumpiness. On the right is Safari. The left is Orion. I scrolled at the same speed with a Logitech Anywhere 3 mouse on my M1 iMac. Recorded in slow mo on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Watch the first 10 seconds or so and then skip to about 1:25 and watch the same. It's very evident on real time. I'd love to see a solution to this.

Outside of this, Orion is the only app I would actually pay to use. Everything else about it is phenomenal. https://www.dropbox.com/s/m7kv8ryham4tk5c/Orion%20Scrolling%20Jumpy.mov?dl=0

                      • Vlad FYI, I don't have a way to record with a high refresh rate, but I just compared between both Safari and Orion on my M1 iMac and my M1 Max with Promotion. Promotion makes a significant difference with Orion. It's still not as smooth as Safari/Brave/Chrome on Promotion. I'm using a Logitech Anywhere 3 mouse, along with Mos app for butter smooth scrolling. But Orion with Promotion is managable with Promotion. Without it, it's not.

Smooth scrolling with Orion on my M1 Max is not as jumpy as on the M1 iMac, although it's still not as smooth as other browsers, but I do not use a mouse with my laptop. I suppose this means the refresh rate helps with smooth scrolling, but this probably was already known.

If there are other apps you'd like me to compare Orion with, I'm happy to. I don't quite understand why it smooth scrolling works with some apps, but not others. It's the same with PDF Expert. Very jumpy, to the point that I have to a trackpad on it. This is also the same no matter which smooth scrolling app I'm using. I've tried a dozen or so.

                        • Vlad replied to this.
                        • Vlad Unfortunately, I tried using QuickTime but it does not capture the smoothness. Maybe because of the lower refresh rate on my M1 iMac? Weird. I tried to hold my phone to record the screen but it's hardly noticeable even with my S21 Ultra. Not sure what the refresh rate is on my phone.

I'm using a Logitech Anywhere 3 mouse and the lack of smooth scrolling with Orion is the only thing holding it back. It is very noticeably smoother on Safari. I currently toggle between Orion and Safari every day. Safari for smooth scrolling, but Orion to use the Bypass Paywalls extension. This is consistent day in and day out on all sites. I just don't have a way to record it.

                        • I came here just to report this. I am using Mos with mouse smooth scrolling app since I use Logitech Anywhere 3 with Mac and the difference on Orion is noticeable between it and Chrome, Brave, and Safari. Anyway, this can be addressed? I love Orion's speed, but bumpy scrolling is too tough on the eyes. Lots of ppl use Logitech mouse with Macs too, so if Orion intends to be a crossover between Safari speed and Chrome extensions, this feels like a must.
