I've recently started using Aerospace, a window management tool for macOS. Orion seems to have a bunch of issues, and always causes it to glitch.

I know Orion can't support every tool out there, but it would be great if there was a way to disable the custom window behavior. I think when I started using Orion years ago, there was an option to choose between normal Mac windows or the Orion managed ones (where each window way treated like an app) but I can't seem to find it in settings anymore.

Would love to just have on app for all my windows, and no quick preview feature πŸ™‚

Could you go into some more detail about how Orion windows don’t function as normal windows? I use yabai, which is kinda similar to amethyst without issue

How Orion doesn't work like normal windows:

      • each window shows up as a separate app in the app launcher
      • each profile acts as a separate app
      • quick preview attempts to act as quick preview, and only becomes an "app" at a certain level of interaction (tbh I've never understood this)

How Orion causes Aerospace to glitch:

      • Navigation to an Orion window with Aerospace's "focus <direction>" has a 50% chance of bouncing you back to your first window
      • Navigation to an Orion window with Aerospace's "focus <direction>" has a 25% chance of skipping the Orion window and going past it
      • Navigation to an Orion window via the macOS app launcher will fail
      • Navigation to an Orion window via clicking on the dock has a 90% success rate, but will occasionally crash aerospace

I will cross post this to the aerospace project as well ~~ Orion happened to be broken for me when I started using Aerospace, and now I've redeveloped my whole workflow around it. I haven't seen any app behave like this, and Orion is very consistently causing issues.

Although I'm not excepting any miracles πŸ™‚ still, if there was a way to revert to classic Mac app style behavior, I would still prefer even if I stopped using aerospace

PS: This issue only happens after a while of using a non-Orion application. Once it does successfully focus, I can normally toggle between them no problem for a few minutes. But as soon as I start doing something else and need to go back to Orion, chaos ensues πŸ˜‚

        Thanks for the details!

In general, do these issues happen if you only have the default profile open?

I have a few things i'd like to clarify on:

duck each profile acts as a separate app

This is how orion fundamentally works, and won't be changed

duck each window shows up as a separate app in the app launcher

I don't quite get this part. Could you provide a video showing this?

        duck quick preview

What is quick preview? Are you referring to app expose?

        duck macOS app launcher

Which macos feature you you referring to? This isn't a standard macos term, so I'm a bit confused here. Is it spotlight?

Hello eirk, while I am not @duck, I was confronted with the same issue after trying multiple window managers in macOS. And indeed, disabling the setting "Open external links in Preview" fixed all my issues with Orion under aerospace.

Nice to see that we've found the root cause of the issue.

For the record, I don't use preview windows, so that could be why I don't experience any issues with yabai.
