Vlad It would be really nice if passwords created in Orion would also show up in Apple's 'new' Passwords app, but that is technically impossible due to Apple's restrictions right? For that one could only use the Keychain app, am I right?

awesome035 Orion can not write into Apple's passwords (neither can any other app). You could potentially export Orion passwords and import them periodically.

oplos Different people want differnet things and we are trying to figure out what is possible. If it is strictly about integration with "Passwords" app - are there any non-Apple products that do so that we can take hints from?

Hi Vlad, apologies — just wanting to clarify. Are you asking what non-Apple password manager-style products integrate well with Orion that you could model off of, or are you asking what non-Safari browsers integrate the Passwords app well?

I guess what I am asking is what is the feature suggestion being proposed by this thread (and in this particular case is it feasible eg. any other non apple app is able to do similar)

orion may not be implementing the autofill passwords api entirely correctly. the above is about the credential provider the poster is creating for Pass, but it applies equally to Apple Passwords (this thread) or other password providers (for me, Strongbox- this is what I use in safari and in other native macos credential fields, but nothing appears in Orion at all). Looks like Orion needs to pass at least one serviceIdentifier for OS-level password providers to work.

I'll add some context in the hope of answering @Vlad's questions.

Currently, to fill a password from Apple's Passwords app in Orion...

you need to have Orion Passwords switched on in Settings (which is non-intuitive if you're not wanting to use Orion's passwords, only Apple's
you need to click in the password field which is not always even present on the log in screen (think Google's two step log in screens)
you need to select Passwords
you get a Passwords box with every single login you have saved in it, instead of just the logins for the site you're on, and sometimes it's impossible to search for the item you need, ie: when the site you're logging into is the same domain as your email address - searching for that domain doesn't filter the list down at all

I don't know what happens after this, as I've never successfully managed to log in to anything in Orion with an Apple Passwords login.

As for how this should work, the iCloud Passwords extensions for Firefox and Chrome essentially make autofilling behave the same as Safari.

click one and you're in

In terms of getting this working in Orion, there's an interesting thread on GitHub where the devs of the Firefox fork Zen have been trying to get the Firefox extension working in their browser.

At the very least, I'd imagine it's worth opening a conversation with Ricky Mondello at Apple about making this work in a way that's usable. https://github.com/apple/password-manager-resources

Since Orion is mostly available on the Apple ecosystem, you are obviously trying to convince Safari users to convert. Lack of Passwords integration is the number one issue I've had so far with Orion – coming from Safari.

For some reason I can't get it to work, I click "passwords" and nothing shows up half of the time
