The feature I am suggesting involves implementing a 'Per Tab Mic Mute' option in Orion with a corresponding shortcut within the Touchbar. Currently, users can mute sound per tab, but there's no shortcut for muting the microphone on a per-tab basis. In the current digital landscape, more users are partaking in online meetings, webinars, and video conferences than ever before. While being able to mute the sound on a per-tab basis is useful, it's equally, if not more, important to control outgoing audio, i.e., the microphone. This can prevent accidental disturbances or leakage of private conversations during a meeting or webinar.
A 'Per Tab Mic Mute' feature would enable users to mute their microphone for individual tabs. This could be especially helpful when a user has multiple communication tabs open and wants to avoid transmitting sound on one while active on another. For instance, a user could be in a work meeting on one tab and have a personal call on hold on another tab.
Adding a Touchbar shortcut for this feature would allow users to easily and quickly mute or unmute their microphone without needing to navigate through settings or options, thereby enhancing the user experience.
To implement this feature, the browser would need to maintain a state of the microphone (on/off) for each tab. When the user mutes the microphone using the Touchbar shortcut, it should only mute the microphone for the currently active tab.
As an example, Google Chrome has implemented a similar feature where users can mute individual tabs, but this is for incoming sound. Our proposed feature would build on this concept but focus on outgoing sound via the microphone.
By integrating this feature, Orion can provide its users with better control over their audio settings, thereby increasing user privacy and enhancing the overall user experience. Users can have more confidence while multitasking on different tabs, knowing they have full control over their audio output on a per-tab basis.
