Steps to reproduce:
NOTE: this was done when I was doing VERY heavy tab loading for a test (HERE) so it may only be reproducible when Orion/macOS is under intense strain.

  1. Open a new tab
  2. Put a website in (I used YouTube because it loads slower for me)
  3. For most of the duration that the website is loading, the address bar is unresponsive (as in can't click into it or select text inside it).

Expected behavior:
The address bar is responsive the whole time

Orion and macOS:
macOS Version 12.0.1
Orion Version 0.99.108.1-beta (WebKit 613.1.10)

Vlad Huh, rebooted Orion (after doing that comparison with Safari because Orion was very laggy) and the problem seems to have disappeared. Odd.

TheOtherKai Could it be reproduced by doing heavy tab loading like you did for the test?

I am not sure exactly what causes this bug other than it seems to be correlated with having a lot of tabs open and loaded.

        Steps to reproduce:
I opened the following pages in both Orion and Safari: (identifiers removed because that's my info)
        web.whatsapp.com
        classroom.google.com * 3
        docs.google.com * 4
        github.com
        drive.google.com * 3
        youtube.com * 4
        developer.apple.com
        spotify.com
        sites.google.com * 3

In the end, Orion reached 6533 MB, Safari: 5333 MB. Measured by taking the child processes and adding them all up. If you include the parent, just add another 1700. Keep in mind that my computer only has 8GB of memory, so that measurement may be a bit wrong, but the proportion should be accurate. Orion uses 123% of Safari.

        Expected behavior:
Orion does not lag out as much.

        Orion and macOS:
        macOS 12.0.1
        Orion Version 0.99.108.1-beta (WebKit 613.1.10)

        Image/Video:
        <- Orion (I think)
<- Safari (Most of it, the rest contains the full tab and I don't want that on the internet)

Possibly. The next time I reboot I will see if this is reproducable.

Vlad changed the title to Orion gets VERY laggy when a lot of tabs are open .

TheOtherKai Thanks for detailed issue description.

I understand there are two problems here

              1. Too much memory used
              2. Orion becoming not responsive

How did it feel not-responsive and did Safari feel non responsive in same situation?

Vlad for orion, when i tried to click on anything there would be a slight delay in pressing the element and it doing something (both website elements and orion buttons and stuff). Typing felt like i had slow keys on (i dont), and the grey highlight on the current tab didnt move when i changed tab. And hovering didnt work at all. Websites loaded significantly slower. Address bar became very unresponsive when loading a website (the one that you couldnt reproduce)

In safari, there was no noticable lag, but websites did load slower. Hovering was delayed but worked. Text appeared when i typed it in.

Merged 8 posts from Address bar is unresponsive when website is loading.

Was not able to directly reproduce.

Opening those tabs in Orion takes 4.9G RAM

                    In Safari it is 5.09G

TheOtherKai Did you have any extensions running in Orion?

Vlad no, removed them all. The only otherapps i had open was VSCode

TheOtherKai Many of the tabs in your list require access to the page you opened like classroom or goole docs/sites.Can you reproduce the issue with publicly available pages?

                          No one is typing
