I've been thinking about this one for a while. I am coming from Arc and have been following the discourse on here about that. I think there's a relatively simple solution that'd satisfy a fair few requests, whilst keeping to the spirit of Orion (and the HIGs).

Currently there are two options:
Tabs / Vertical
Show Bookmarks Sidebar

If the user could opt to show Favotires and/or Bookmarks in the Vertical tabs view, then:

  • there'd be a more reliable saved pages section (the specific urls would survive restarts etc.)
  • the tabs could be renamed
  • folders will be supported

And all of those features are already implemented in the existing 'Show Bookmarks Sidebar'!

The section(s) would need to be visually adjusted to fit with the current vertical tabs view.

Like so:

Spiritually it's similar to 'Show Bookmarks Bar', but instead of adding another horizontal bar, it adds a section to the existing vertical sidebar.

Much like Arc does (i think it's the only browser that does this 🤔 ) i would love to have bookmars and tabs displayed together. Very often im opening a lot of links from my bookmarks and having to shuffle open tabs at the same time. So i would be immensely helpful to have them together in one view.

It could be added as a fourth option for Tab Layout.

Having this, using a shortcut to show/hide the sidebar would let us access tabs and bookmarks much quicker and in one place.

One extra thing I could suggest that is not part of Arc would beder between tabs and bookmarks movable, and if the bookmark making the divis or tabs are hidden due to overflow, make the section scrollable.

Merged 1 post from Display Boomarks and Tabs at the same time on the sidebar.

I've fleshed this out and think it makes sense to give the user the option for the Favorites and/or Bookmarks Bar.

Those options could be as simple as this:

As a stretch goal, I think the existing Bookmarks Sidebar search is pretty neat, so that could be an additional option, but also search across Open Tabs too, looking something like this:

@MysticMiyagi how can I get this on my installation? Even as a preview feature it looks awesome 🤩🤩but will o be able to show only the regular bookmarks? I would prefer to have only those, no favourites or bookmark bar

@javit89 ah, this doesn’t exist. It’s just a mockup of the idea.

Yes, I think that makes sense. In that case there’d be another ‘Boomarks’ option under the other two I’ve added and enabling that would show another section in the sidebar.

MysticMiyagi yeah basically the same as arc would be the best for me 🙂 I like having a minimalist bookmarks bar too on Orion

Thanks for the mockups @MysticMiyagi I like them. This combined with the new slide saved windows feature would be great. I'm not sure about the Favorites and Bookmarks Bar in the sidebar. I think one of them would cover all uses, or am I missing something?

I had another idea regarding bookmarks in the sidebar:
What if you could choose bookmark folders in your Bookmarks Window that you can pin to the sidebar?

It could work like this: Click a sidebar icon in your Bookmarks overview and that folder shows in the sidebar.
I do realize that you could also use the Bookmarksbar for this. But some people might want to use both for separate purposes: sidebar bookmarks and bookmarks bar.

                Thanks @janpeeters

That’s why I’ve suggested this approach, it enables flexibility / user preference whilst repurposing existing code/functionality - Show Bookmarks Sidebar - hence minimising development requirements and complexity.

Rather than adding a new custom pinning feature, you could achieve the scenario(s) you’ve mentioned by (adding items to and) showing Favourites in the sidebar, while using the existing horizontal Bookmarks Bar.

Definitely a +1 for this idea. Being able to have some expandlable stacks in my sidebar would be a huge usability improvement.

Currently pinned tabs work well, but I can't see their titles, only their favicon.
I'd love to have a 'List view' for Pinned tabs.

I'm trying to move back to Orion, from Arc browser.

Arc shows Pinned tabs in a vertical list, as with Open tabs, just in a list above. I'd love Orion to have this view option, as currently pinned tabs aren't very usable for me with only a favicon.

I think this would also make the idea of renaming pinned tabs more important: https://orionfeedback.org/d/4768-ability-to-rename-any-pinned-tab

I see there being a new option in this menu, when clicking the Window dropdown in the sidebar, then the small 'settings' icon in the bottom right. An option along the lines of 'Show Pinned tabs as a List'. Or an option 'Show Pinned tabs as favicons only', which is how they currently work.

Hopefully that explains what I'm requesting. Thanks!

Merged 2 posts from Pinned tabs in list view.

I just wanted to shoutout to @janpeeters and @Vlad because this seeing conversation and being added as Planned so quick told me I made the right decision subscribing to both Orion+ and Kagi, and I'm gonna begin evangelizing the heck of out this ecosystem and team to everyone.
