am experiencing a significant issue with Japanese text input when using Orion Browser on iPad. This problem disrupts my workflow, as I cannot input kanji characters correctly. The issue is not exclusive to ChatGPT but also occurs in similar text input fields on other webpages.

  1. Open ChatGPT (Web version) in Orion Browser on iPad.
  2. Attempt to type Japanese text and convert hiragana to kanji.
  3. Observe that input behaves unexpectedly.

Does it happen in Safari (if it could be a WebKit bug)?
No, the issue does not occur in Safari or Brave. However, it does occur in Google Chrome and Firefox.

What did you expect to happen? Describe the desired functionality.
Japanese text input should function correctly, allowing smooth conversion from hiragana to kanji, as it does in Safari and Brave.

Environment:

  • Device: iPad Air (5th Gen) + UK Magic Keyboard
  • Browser: Orion Browser (Latest version as of Feb 2025)
  • Network: iPhone 15 tethering
  • Other browsers tested:
    • Bug occurs in: Orion Browser, Google Chrome, Firefox
    • Bug does NOT occur in: Safari, Brave

Why This Matters:

  • Orion Browser is my only viable option because it supports Google Chrome extensions, which are essential for my work.
  • Other browsers have critical issues that make them unusable.
  • The ChatGPT app version also has a critical bug, making it unusable for me.
  • I am currently hospitalized and cannot use my iMac. Due to finger mobility issues, a software keyboard is not a practical alternative.

    Hi ErioYsd thank you for taking the time to report this issue, I am sorry to hear about your hospitalisation!

    I would love to get to the bottom of this, unfortunately my knowledge and understanding of the Japanese language and various writing systems is extremely limited.
    I wanted to see the expected behaviour in Safari, so I have added the "Japanese — Kana" keyboard to my test iPad, and I have tried to enter some text in chatgpt.com in Safari, but I don't see the same interface as you. I only see a basic vertical drop down of options, rather that the full featured popunder you show in your video.
    Would you be able to help and guide me in order to replicate the expected behaviour you see in Safari?
