Let's begin by trying if disabling Settings -> Appearance -> Hide Toolbar on Scroll does anything. This is a known cause for poor scrolling performances (stuttering on my device, not as extreme as the issues you have described). Nevertheless, I could see the two issues being related.
If that does not solve the issue, could you share a screen recording of the freezing?
