  • Close tab icon is always visible for the active tab when using the Standard layout

The close tab icon is always visible for the active tab when using the Standard layout.

Expectation is for the close tab icon to only be visible when user hovers on the tab. This is the behavior for tabs in native macOS apps (Finder, TextEdit, Safari, other native third-party apps). This is also the behavior when using the Compact or Vertical tab layouts in Orion.

If the current behavior (always visible for the active tab) is intended, there should be an option for the user to revert it back to the standard behavior that is used everywhere else in macOS.

IIRC vlad said that this was intentional, not sure why. I agree with you in that this shouldn't be a default.

(Furthermore, the x isn't shown by default in vertical tabs either)

albertcsanjuan This is intentional and we consider UX improvement over Safari. A new browser user would not necessarly know how to close a tab without. clear indication.

I don't think your target audience are new browser users necessarily, since they: (a) specifically want a WebKit-based browser, (b) want to use Chrome/Firefox extensions, (c) want a native macOS app. All of these by the way are key messages on Orion's homepage.

Highlighting (c) specifically: I'd argue that users who are specifically looking for a native macOS app would be expecting macOS-like UX.

Lastly, the close tab icon is hidden for the active tab (until you hover) when using Orion's Vertical and Compact tab layouts. So your users are clearly able to close tabs without issues there.

The expected behavior is that the close tab icon should only appear when the user hovers over the tab, similar to how tabs behave in native macOS apps like Finder, TextEdit, Safari, and other third-party applications. This hover-based visibility of the close icon is also the default behavior when using the Compact or Vertical tab layouts in Orion. This design choice enhances the user experience by keeping the interface clean while still providing quick access to close tabs when needed.
