  • Links from other apps fail to open in Orion if Orion not already running

  • BugsMobileDone

I have Orion as the default browser on my iPhone.
When I click on a link in some other app on my iPhone and orion gets opened, it restores its state from the previous launch but does not open the web link that I clicked.

So every time I need to go back to another app and click the same link again - then it gets opened in Orion, probably because Orion is already loaded into the memory.

I would expect external links to open in Orion from the first try, without the need to go back to another app and tap the link again.

In the attached video I was trying to open a link from Craft Slack community, but when Orion opened it did not show the link. Instead, it restored my tabs (and thus you see Superlist tab instead of Craft). So I go back and open Craft link again, and then it works.

I can confirm this is a regression. It also happens to me on 1.3.7 (15) (WebKit 8617.2.4.10.7).

      I'm also experiencing this, iOS 17, Orion 1.3.7 (15).

Selecting a link from another app (e.g., Mail.app) when Orion on iOS is closed results in Orion launching and reloading the last-used tab rather than loading the external link.

The desired functionality is to open Orion with a new tab and open the external link. If Orion was previously running when selecting the external link, it does open the link in a new tab, as expected.

Merged 3 posts from When closed, Orion reloads last used tab when opening external link.

When Orion app is not open in the background, the app opens without following an opened link. Steps:

            1. Make sure Orion is the default browser
            2. Find Orion in the iOS task manager and swipe to kill it.
            3. Open a browser link from a different app
            4. Notice the link does not open in a new tab, but your last tab is shown with the app opening.

Orion should open the link in a new tab

I would like to add to this that when I change the "Start Orion With" setting from "All Tabs from Last Session" to "New Tab" then it starts to work properly (meaning that it opens the link from another app even when Orion had not been loaded into the memory previously).

Thus, this definitely has something to do with how Orion restores previous session, it probably "forgets" the page that the user was going to open from another app after restoring its previously saved tabs.

spotlight search brings up a new tab with search results both when the browser is open and when it's closed/auto-unloaded from memory

Merged 2 posts from Spotlight search doesn't work when browser is unloaded.

Often, but not always, when I click on a link that opens Orion (for example from iMessage) it will override the tab that is currently open rather than opening the link in a new tab. This causes confusion and potential loss of tabs left open intentionally.

Clicking a link from outside the Orion app should always open the link in Orion in a new tab, not take over the current active tab.

Sometimes when opening links from other apps (Mail, Discord, News, Messages, etc.) with Orion set as my default browser but not open in my recent apps, Orion will open to what I was viewing before, but the link I clicked is ignored. I have to go back to the previous app and try again, and then it will open the link correctly.

I expect that opening a link from another application will open Orion with all previous tabs still present in the background, but the link I clicked will be open in a new tab and that tab will be open.

                          Orion version: 1.3.7 (15) (WebKit 8617.2.4.10.8)

                          iOS version: 17.3.1

Merged 1 post from Opening links in Orion sometimes opens Orion without opening the link.

Any chance this issue can get prioritized? This is often causing me lose track of tabs left open intentionally by being replaced by something else. This make the usability of the browser very difficult when trying to keep tabs organized.
