Syncing won’t work, no matter what I do. I have tried everything I can think of. It works well between my 2 iPhones and my iPad, but my Mac will not send or receive a sync.

I have everything ticked on.
I have tried turning it all on and off again.
I have logged in and out of iCloud.
I have restarted all the systems.
I have reinstalled all the apps.

It just won’t work!

Any ideas?

mmmmmm Have you checked the documentation on sync?

Yes I have followed all the steps I can see.

I believe I encountered similar issues after I fully switched to Orion and imported all my Safari data.

Specifically, I started with Orion on iOS for a week (?) or so, then added Orion on Mac and imported my data, then facepalmed for a while since it seemed like my starting on mobile had screwed up the sync with my old tabs, etc.

Tried all the suggested solutions, dove into trying to get iCloud working, finding the actual iCloud sync files after creating “ghost” iPhones by deleting the app… and then, for no apparent reason, the sync worked and it’s worked pretty well since.

So, long non-story short, iCloud syncing is dodgy and magically works or fails to work despite all your best efforts to fix it.

(I’ve had similar issues on Safari in the past, too.)

(Maybe it could be worth adding a more manual / force Orion sync someday?)

TooManyTabs iCloud sync is 100% under Apple's control. There is nothing we can do to initiate sync or force it. We can not even report status of sync as we do not know. Either the files sync and they appears where they should be or they dont.

So yeah it is great when it works, but the web is full of websites where people report problems with sync and it remains on Apple to iron it out.

I gotta say I agree with the iCloud sync synopsis there. It does work like magic until it doesn’t. I suggest maybe closing this issue of mine as ‘out of your control’ and I’ll chalk it down to Apple. I suspect (as has happened before with other iCloud sync issues) that it will randomly start working one day.

If there was a way for you to add some kind of force sync to the browser then I would encourage that, otherwise I think there is little you can do if it works in the majority of cases.

            a month later

I have had many more sync problems the last month or two. I felt like sync was working better but now is really broken for me. I am syncing two Macs and iPhone and an iPad occasionally. I have problems in both directions -- too many tabs where some sets of tabs are opened multiple times resulting in 100 tabs, OR, sparse sync where many tabs do not sync. I know this is not helpful for debugging, but just wanted to say more than just "+1"

            EDIT:

            • I have gone through all the steps in the documentation. I noticed on my Phone I had 39 tabs not in a group. I added them to a new group called Phone. On my Mac, the group showed up very fast. Only 12 of the 39 tabs showed up.
            • often the iPhone Orion takes a really long time to start and is frozen. I have always attributed this to sync, but have no evidence
            • Recent Beta installs of Orion on my Mac have cleared ALL open tabs, frustrating. Not sure if this has impacted sync
            • I have one group for my socials and I keep several PINNED. Often the pinned ones go missing or get closed via sync

            EDIT 2:

            • on my phone I am deleting open tabs and watching my Mac, and the deletes transfer over almost instantly (both are on Wifi). So somehow over time they get out of sync, maybe a partial failure or interruption
            • Vlad replied to this.

RobOK Unfortuantey it is all under Apple's control. We just react to sync events that Apple sends Orion to update content.

I turned off sync, I may try again some other time, but it was more frustrating than anything. Thanks!
