Add an option to the settings to navigation to the previous tab you had opened after closing your current tab. The current behavior appears to navigate you back to the previous tab in your list. For situations like pinned tabs, this means that you may be navigated to another random tab in your list.

Example Use Case:
When reading on a news aggregator (like hacker news), I open a link in a new tab. Navigate to that tab. After finishing reading, I close that tab. I should be taken back to my previously opened tab.

If I navigate to a different tab in the middle of that flow, it could either return to that other tab, or perhaps return to the tab that the originating "open in new tab" request came from.

added a vote for this and naturally I agree that it should be an user-set option as I can see how it would work both ways (in my simple example: I would goto slashdot in first tab and command-click two titles of immediate interest which gives me another two tabs - then click on the middle tab to read an article before intentionally expecting command-w to jump me to the second article instead of back to slashdot itself)

i think having the setting "open new tab next to current tab" sorta helps with this

AyaanAhmed25 nvm lol, for some reason even with this option checked when u close the tab it opens the tab to its right, instead of the tab to itls left(the "main" tab)

Can someone compare the current behavior to Safari?

            safari 16.0 (17614.1.25.9.10) here and..

if I load slashdot in first tab and command-click two articles then go to the middle (of three now) tab and close it it jumps to the second article, same behaviour as current orion preferences

the only tabbing setting I can find in safari itself as far as I know is..to make the new tab active, thats it

            Safari Version 16.2 (17614.3.7.1.7, 17614)
Same behavior as @portastar. So it seems this would deviate from Safari's normal behavior, but in my opinion it would be a nice feature to add.

I agree, I would like that as an option in settings

Can someone show this with a use case scenario to clearly illustrate what happens now vs what would you like to happen?

                  Vlad

                  Here's one scenario

Here are the tabs I currently have open:

                  Tab 1 (Current): Google Docs
                  Tab 2: Research Document

                  • Open new tab to search Google
                  • Closes tab
                  • I am on the Research Document when I want to go back to the Google Docs to write down the information I learnt from Google.

ashp0 Thank you. And can you confirm what happens in Safari?

Vlad It will open the tab the last tab.

                      • Vlad replied to this.

Vlad tab on the right of the closed tab if it exists, if not then, tab on the left of the closed tab

                        • Vlad replied to this.

Vlad yea correct, but the above comments were saying they would like it if there was an option to do it differently, rn when u close a tab it just opens the tab on the right of the tab u close, regardless of when u used it, but people r saying they would like it better, if instead of simply opening the tab to the right of the closed tab, it opens the previously active tab. aka tab u were in before the would-be closed tab.

Please correct me if i misinterpreted anything guys.

@Vlad I finally determined the use-case that is causing me issues. You are corerct in that normal tab behavior mirrors Safari. It appears that when you close a tab, it returns to the tab that was active prior to the one you closed. However, the issue I'm experiencing is when I open a new tab from a pinned tab, then close that new tab, it does not return to the pinned tab despite it being the last tab I had active.

If you want, I can create a different issue that better describes this bug. I can also record it if needed. I have only tested this bug using the vertical sidebar as well, so I'm not sure if that is required.

ericschmar yes please, the clearer the description of the ask is the easier for us to react (also please compare behavior with Safari)

                                Vlad

Sure thing. Here are my recordings. Safari doesn't have vertical tabs so I just tried my best with what I could.
