Hi there, I am eager to try Orion and really like what I see so far, however I can't seem to get importing data from other browsers to work.

Steps to reproduce:
Freshly install Orion, go to Settings > General > Import and open the Import Wizard.
Choose any browser and any import option - it does not matter which browser I choose, or what i choose to import from that browser. It always gets stuck at "Import from X" - "Importing browsing data from X... Please wait...".
I have the following other browsers installed and tried importing from them: Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Brave.

I already tried waiting 2 hours or more, to no avail.
I tried resetting Orion, reinstalling Orion, deleting "~/Library/Application Support/Orion" and reinstalling Orion, rebooting my MacBook - the problem persists.
I also tried giving Orion full disk access permission, no change.

What I noticed is that Orion does import some bookmarks after i cancel the import. Choosing to import only bookmarks (so no passwords, history etc) doesn't prevent the import from getting stuck.

Expected behavior:
Import completes or gives an error message.

Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Orion Version: Version 0.99.121.1-beta (WebKit 614.1.20)
OS Version: macOS Ventura 13.0.1 build 22A400
Hardware: MacBook Pro M1 Max 16"

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help - crash dumps? log files?

Thanks!

What makes this hard to debug is that we can not reproduce it, it works for us. WE will have to leave it up to you to debug what actually chokes it. To do this, you try importing different things until you discover which one causes the issue. Then if it is bookmarks for example, you canexport them in safari to html file and try importing that.. if that does not work, try removing some etc..

until you can point to what causes the problem.

Hi @Vlad. I fully understand that this is hard to fix when you can't reproduce it.
The problem for me is that it does not matter which Browser I import from, or what I import - eg. only Bookmarks or only History.
It even breaks if I try to import from a completely fresh Profile with no Bookmarks and only one page in the history - be it Firefox, Chrome or Safari, I tried them all.

Oh nevermind - I managed to get it to work!
The thing is, there are two ways to import from other Browsers.

The first one is Settings > General > Import Browser data. That's the one I tried to use, and it doesn't work no matter which browser or which data, as explained above.

However, while looking around the UI I found a second way: Menubar > File > Import From > [Browser]. When I import data via this route, it works with all browsers and all data!

@MarkNashed try that, maybe it works for you as well! and @Vlad maybe this helps you to reproduce the issue - there seems to be some differences between the two import methods?

fekle Yeah certainly, that is interesting information.

When i just install browser I want to transfer my data from another browser and it's not clear when it's end or in which part it is

I suggest to add something like this

                • Vlad replied to this.

Yeah I agree that it might be a good idea, although it might be difficult to implement a full progress bar since it's just copying over data from files (iirc). However, the 1/3 thing is definitely a good idea, or bolding the thing that's currently being imported.

halp3ars Orion bolds the item being currently imported. Do you not see that? Can you show a video of what you see?

                    Hey everyone..

Can you try importing through File menu -> Import From...

We have reports this may work.

Vlad It's work great and show all steps, i think it's bug in setting menu

Merged 6 posts from Loading bar while import data from other browsers.
                          2 years later

Hi, I'm using the latest version Version 0.99.131.0.1-beta (WebKit 621.1.2.111.4) on macOS 14 on an M3, and am attempting to import bookmarks from Firefox. I have about 100k bookmarks and have attempted to import two ways:

                          1. File > Import From > Firefox
                          2. File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML file...

When I try method (1), it sits there stuck at either "Fetching "Bookmarks"..." or I think I once might have seen it show (0/97k...). It stayed this way for at least an hour.

When I try method (2), it shows no progress whatsoever.

In both instances it uses a whole bunch of CPU.

It would be great if it could show more progress about what's going on, especially via method 2, so that we can help you guys troubleshoot what's going on (without sharing our actual bookmarks).
