I keep trying Orion. I have downloaded every release and beta version. Every time, any bookmark syncing extension refuses to work. For me this is a deal-breaker. I will start using Orion when xbrowsersync or floccus works like it does with pretty much every other browser. I have reported the issue multiple times and added it to your Google Docs extensions-not-working spreadsheet. If you are never going to enable it, I will forget Orion and carry on using browsers where it does work.

phillip There are hundreds of browsers features and thousands of extensions out there and we prioritize them based on the perceived user need. It is good that you posted this issue, so others can upvote it and help prioritize us investigating this particular extension. I also invite you to upvote issues others posted that resonate with you.

It is not that we do not want to look into it, just there is just so much to be done as you can witness by the changelogs we release and we have prioritization based on size of the affected userbase.

Vlad changed the title to xbrowsersync not working. .

I don't think Mozilla or those behind Chromium have to do things to their browser codes to make extensions work. Orion is simply not viable for me without extensions which manipulate bookmarks. I will continue using my previous browsers until such a time when you allow extensions to simply work. I'm absolutely not into a popularity contest. My needs are fully met by other browsers and I don't care who else agrees or disagrees whether time or effort should be put into making a particular extension work. I would suggest you implement an appropriate API or suchlike which does what extension support does elsewhere. I have never needed to contact Mozilla or Chromium to ask those developers to get an extension working. From what you're saying, maybe webkit was not a great choice on which to base Orion.

phillip I understand your position. It is important to acknowledge that Chrome and Firefox are products that have existed for 15+ years and we are just in beta stage of Orion.

As highlighted in our FAQ, extension support in Orion is still experimental and we are at about 70% extension API coverage. Some extensions not working is to be expected in a beta product (and testing a beta product is what you signed up for).

We hope to release v1.0 of Orion with full extension support some time next year.

Please do not forget as well, most developers focus on a browser. They write an extension with a single code base to work for Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Edge. For tweaks they check the useragent and Orion does not match neither any Chrome based Browser nor Firefox. Here Orion just may fail to work, it does not matter if Orion supports all extension API functions or not. I learned with my extension, that with Orion you can see how much buggy some extension are. Btw I'll be happy too and cannot wait for floccus to work to sync my bookmarks. ;-)

@Vlad Thanks for replying so civilly to my rant! I get it, I'm just frustrated!

A heads up to @tom and others looking for bookmark syncing, while xbrowsersync doesn't work like it does on other browsers, hitting the cog symbol in the drop-down in another browser lets you export your bookmarks and in Orion you can use the same menu in xbrowsersync to import the exported file. This process auto deletes your current Orion bookmarks and replaces them with those you exported from the other browser. This is much better than doing a manual import where the import shows as separate folders and bookmarks need to be manually moved and previous bookmarks deleted.

xbrowsersync now works! I just updated to version 0.99.109-beta and let out a yell when my bookmarks were updated. Cheers guys!

Hmmm. I spoke too soon. It worked correctly the first time, but any changes I make to the Orion bookmarks are not synced.

phillip We did not target the extension with the last update, the progress is probably a result of the general work we did on the extension APIs. Bit more patience then...

Would love to see support for xbrowsersync in the future, so I can sync my bookmarks between Orion and Edge.
Also, thank you for your hard work on extension support!

I've given up with Orion. Extension support is patchy and until xbrowsersync works it's a no-go for me. Using a beta product means you expect things not to work so you need to use another reliable browser for more serious things. To have bookmark syncing between these browsers makes complete sense. To focus on bookmark syncing between various less-stable beta incarnations of Orion in preference makes no sense to me at all.

xbrowsersync nor floccus are STILL not working. It seems logical that there is an issue with bookmarks in Orion and the ability of an extension to manipulate them. This would surely be a step forward because if this is fixed there would be a positive knock-on effect. I still feel the devs are resolutely opposing inter-bowser bookmark syncing and only they know why. I keep going on about it, and all I get from the likes of @eirk is to go elsewhere and that nobody is forcing me to use Orion.

yep, exactly. the apis aren't 100% done. This isn't something that is very important, and other things are currently taking priority.

I still feel the devs are resolutely opposing inter-bowser bookmark syncing and only they know why.

They are not. This is definitely an issue, and will be worked on some time in the future. Be reminded that probably at least a few thousand people use Orion, more than one thousand have accounts here, and they are only a team of less than 20. They can't even begin to compete with a browser like Chrome or Firefox, with (probably) thousands of developers, and decades of maturity. This will be worked on some time in the future, but not sure when.

If you don't like Orion, don't use it. Don't get upset because the developers aren't putting your issue first and foremost, who very generously, made this website for people to give feedback on, and participate in the community. Chrome and Firefox don't have similar things, with developers this intimate in the community.

It's now almost a year since the last update to this thread and xbrowsersync STILL doesn't work. The sycophants are fine with it, I've just moved on and am using other browsers. Just thought I'd pop by to keep this thread alive.
