High memory usage

I noticed some freezing and slowdowns on Orion while doing some work and this is what I saw in Activity Monitor:

Thank you for some guidance on how to make this issue more understandable for you. I will try to recreate this issue and give more detail.

In the case of the above quoted post, I can tell you exactly what I was doing at the time:

1) Started new Orion session
2) Started working on strings in https://localazy.com/ with the only other tab being orionfeedback.org
3) Started to notice some slowdowns and freezes with spinning beach balls
4) Checked Activity Monitor to see Orion taking over 8 GB on an 8 GB system
5) Memory leak?

I hope that's at least somewhat helpful.

I also had a Memory Leak, but forgot to make a Screenshot. For me, it took 89 GB of Ram. Sadly,Ii can't post the Pages I had opened due to the force quit.

Ok, while I still cannot confirm why/how this happens, I did get this screen again:

I had one Orion profile with 25 tabs open. Hadn't restarted since my last post 10ish days ago.
Orion Version 0.99.121.1-beta (WebKit 614.1.20)
MacBook Pro (macOS Ventura 13.0 build 22A380)

Things to note:

The report from the day before (2022-11-16) shows Footprint: 607.30 MB
The report from the leak (2022-11-17) shows Footprint: 34.12 GB
I got the system out of memory window right after waking the machine up from sleep, which it had been in for ca. 12h.

Not sure if the second report can indicate what happened, that led to this memory leak.
Maybe that helps?

So many posts here without a single outlining steps to reproduce the problem. Screenshots and other point of time evidence is simply not useful as it tells us nothing.

We need someone to say :

Start clean orion install
2.
3.
4.
memory leak! (because Orion used much more memory then Safari in same circumstances)

When we have that we'll be able to fix it. Thanks for understanding.

Vlad Sorry, Vlad. Totally understand your need for reproducible steps and that is not providing them can be frustrating. If I could, I would. But to me the problem only happens every few days and as I’m using Orion as my primary browser, it’s hard to isolate. I was hoping the Console dump might help.

Glad to see that Justin found one way to reproduce a memory leak.
If I find some spare time, I’ll see if I can reproduce that too.

I am currently doing that. I can give you an exact scenario where it causes the memory usage to balloon:

1) Start at https://localazy.com/p/kagi-search
2) Select a language to work on (in my case, Canadian English)
3) Clicking the link will load https://localazy.com/p/kagi-search/phrases/328 but it will freeze for a period of time before displaying strings.
4) Check Activity Monitor to see memory usage increase by 300-400 MB roughly.
5) Repeat this and the memory consumption will continue to increase each time.

This is after testing this for 10-15 minutes:

The memory consumption does appear to increase over time without interaction as well.

Can you confirm this is with (near)clean orion install (no extension involved)
Can you confirm this does not happen in Safari in same circumstances

I have two extensions installed: Bitwarden and Privacy Badger. I will attempt to re-create this without any extensions enabled and do the same in Safari.

The behaviour does appear to be the same with the extensions disabled. I will try the same with Safari now.

In the case of Safari (completely clean and not ever used), the memory consumption does not appear to 'balloon' as it does in Orion. After around 15 minutes of trying to recreate it this is what Activity Monitor reports:

Dustin We we re investigating this today and in your safari screenshot, there is 2GB useed by Localazy. it does seem to indicate usage balooning?

I should note that I changed number of displayed strings from 10 to 100. Forgot to mention that.

@Vlad From my experience testing them, I would say no. It appears that while Safari does take a lot of memory in this usage, it seems to plateau whereas Orion appears to continue to use more and more memory.

Dustin This is purely caused by WebKit process and it could be just a difference in WebKit used by Orion and Safari. So we can check with the next release which will use newer webkit
