  • Laggy address bar and slow autocomplete results in searching URL's instead of autocompleting

  • BugsDesktopPlanned

Steps to reproduce:
This issue is twofold. Firstly, typing in the address bar is slow in general - words take a split second to show up after they are typed, and show up erratically - only when typing quickly. In addition, when typing fast, history autocompletes are often searched, instead of completing the URL.

Expected behavior:
Less lag, and correct autocomplete instead of using a search engine.

Orion, OS version; hardware type:
0.99.110.3-rc, Monterey 12.1

Image/Video:
Apologies for the awful video, but here, I type "mai" + enter, expecting it to direct me to a site I visit frequently, mail.google.com. However, it googles "mai" since it autocompletes too slowly. Pausing for a second after typing it, it is correctly autocompleted.

s2e3440z Does the problem persist if you remove history and /or bookmark autocomplete search in settings?

Vlad Nope - Just reset my orion, and the address bar was snappy to type in. It's still possible to search something instead of it autocompleting, but it's practically impossible, need to copy paste (rather than happening frequently when typing it out).

s2e3440z Sorry can you elaborate what happened after you restarted. Does the problem persist or not?

s2e3440z Interestingly enough, my experience is different. While I didn't reset the browser, I simply disabled autocomplete for history and bookmarks, as per Vlad's comment, yet I still experienced some lag/stuttering (not nearly as bad as without disabling).

Vlad Ah my bad. I simply completely reset with rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Orion and the lag is negligible. Misread your comment.

saul @Vlad Just to add onto this, the behaviour is identical to the address bar lag that we previously discussed and debugged, which leads me to believe it may be a regression.

Does anyone have steps to reproduce? Is it tied to large number of items in history and/or bookmarks?

                • saul replied to this.

Vlad I believe it may be related to that, yes.

In terms of reproducing, it's more noticeable when typing quicker, so that may be something to attempt. However, it doesn't seem to lag or stutter when typing randomly (ie. not real queries), which supports the idea that it may be tied to the history/bookmarks.

0.99.113.2-beta on Monterey 12.3 exhibits this issue for me (as did earlier versions).

If any of you are still on Monterey, do you have anything new to share regarding this issue? Does it still exist?

                      No one is typing
