1Password causes major performance degradation

Unfortunately, Orion 1.0.0 does not improve this performance with 1Password. In fact, it is slightly worse.

With no extensions (using the same H/W as when I made the OP, now with MacOS 26.0.1):

I’m experiencing these same issues on the latest release of Orion v1.0

I’m guessing it’s because the 1Password extension is the Chrome variant and not the Safari variant.

Yep same issue here on 1.0 with 1password enabled and instaleld (firefox version) I get a result of around 11 whilst without I get a result of around 35. I really really want to use this browser but I simply cannot at the current state.

I posted this in the other 1password performance thread as well, but I wanted to share updated numbers here as well.

I started a fresh profile today (Feb 18, 2026) and the delta with only 1Password installed was staggering.

I really hope this gets some attention from the team soon since we've passed the big 1.0 milestone.

I just tried this build and installed the 1Password extension. What a relief! After 1+ year of struggeling this feels so much better. I signed in to 5 sites using the extension and did not have any issues. That has never happened to me before using Orion! Thanks a lot for your work on this.

Okay, trying out that dev build posted above - thank you nrudnyk and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. Life was doing its thing.

Okay, lets restart Orion... Nope, that didn't help.

Alright, what about the Safari extension? ... nope it won't connect to the desktop app. Running without connecting still only got me 15 points.

Well that connected instantly but somehow did even worse

Sanity check time, reopened orion again without any extensions and got 53.0 - better than the first try

I'm starting to see "Luxurious Wooden Cheese" on the inside of my eyelids at this point, but lets try one lest test.. Installed directly from the chrome store and got: 14.5.
Tried disconnecting it from the desktop app to see if that would help. After restarting: 14.7 (I'd say variance)

Conclusion

I'd love to say I have better news, but there doesn't seem to be measurable improvements from when I checked last. I've also started a thread on the 1Password forums to do some debugging with them, but they want me to capture logs from several hours of reviewing PRs which I haven't been able to get to yet.

I was also unable to reproduce RichieB's results (just being unable to unlock but speed being much better) HOWEVER! on non default (aka the "Primary" profile) profiles it seems to work flawlessly. Kind of defeats the purpose of the synced primary profile, but I'm sure you can figure out what the difference is. For reference I'm on a MBP16 running MacOS 26 with an M4 Pro and 48GB of memory.

Edit: One last interesting note, in the dev build you posted the Speedometer runs got slower over the course of the run, rather than starting slow and finishing slow like they do in the current RC build.

laiz I have not tested it extensively yet, but I tried the worst offenders (kagi search page and Azure DevOps PR comment fields) as well as the dedicated test suite posted here https://orionfeedback.org/d/11099-speed-decline-with-1password-extension and in all cases 1Password behaves significantly better.

The 1P autocomplete dropdown opens significantly faster and as far as I can tell more reliably (though I'm gonna have to test it for longer to say that for sure, this issue has always been intermittent), it is now possible to close the passkey and credential save popup prompts, and the first focus delay has improved significantly. It's still not on par with other browsers, but in the test suite the cold start input focus delay is consistently under 100ms, which is sometimes perceptible but not annoying

One slightly annoying thing is that in this build 1Password doesn't work at all in my existing profile, I had to create a new fresh one, but that might just be some weird interaction caused by me having two different Orion RC builds at the same time.

Interesting. When I launch the test build of the app using my normal profile, I get a WebKit error message instead of loading the current page. The 1Password extension also throws an "unknown database error" message and then doesn't activate at all.
But on a fresh profile with the current version of the Chrome 1Password extension installed, it runs great.

@nrudnyk I have been running Version 1.0.4 (143.1.0.2-dev) for a few days now and while it is a huge improvement, not everything is working as it should. The Orion 1Password extension takes a long time to notice the main 1Password app is unlocked. For example. when I try to log in to a website, it will popup the TouchID check to unlock 1Password. This works (main 1Password app is unlocked) but the 1Password extension still shows the locked screen with the "Open 1Password" button. Clicking the button does nothing. It takes a full minute for it to notice it can now access the passwords. From that moment on it works great again.

I just got a Speedometer 3.1 score of 8...
Running Tahoe 26.3, Orion 1.0.4 (143.1-rc), on an M1 Max MacBook Pro 32GB RAM.

Crazy poor performance, just going to a github repo lags out, let alone something more complicated like Shopify backend or Trading View.

This is in my main Orion profile, with a bunch of extensions like 1Password, Consent-O-Matic and uBlock Origin.

In a similarly "loaded up" Brave profile, I get a score of 20.

Then, in a fresh Orion profile (changing no other variables, many other programs open), I get a score of 28

Fresh Brave profile, 27.

Stock Safari gets a score of 33.

Just tried again, with my main Orion profile.

Disabled all extensions, ran Speedometer. = 31.6 score
Then, tried again with just 1Password enabled. = 6.51 score
Then disabled 1Password, and enabled the other 10 extensions. = 9.41 score
Then enabled all extensions again, including 1Password = 3.31 score
Disable all plugins = 14.1 score
Restart browser, re-run test (all still disabled) = 31.2 score
Re-run with all extensions enabled = 10.1 score
Re-run with all disabled again = 13.5 score
Re-re-run after restart browser, all disabled = 31.7 score

Note that during all of this, speedometer was the only tab open, and no other Orion profiles open. Many other background apps but all not being used, this was the only thing active. I know it's not a proper "clean" test, but I did this intentionally to check real world performance as I would use my computer.
RAM and CPU usage remained stable throughout, no big spikes or leaks.

Conclusion: with more and more tests, it's clear that extensions in general have a huge effect on Orion's overall performance, and takes a restart of the browser to restore performance even when disabled.

I've been testing the Dev build for a day now. The first thing I noticed on sties that I used to play chess puzzles the performance is significantly better. Almost as good as Safari Browser, but one additional issue is that 1Password will not open or work utilizing the Dev build.

Thing is it takes much less wall-clock time to actually execute the test with my profile full of nonsense than Orion did with just 1Password enabled. Without 1Password enabled Orion SLAUGHTERS Arc - its not even close.

I'll also try to run the dev build for a few days and see if it feels better in real world usage rather than synthetics. 🤞

Half an hour later:

1Pass does not install properly on the Primary (as in default synced to all devices) profile
Installs just fine on profiles from the "clean" preset
The autofill is MUCH more responsive on the sites I've used it on

Have yet to do any github related stuff, which is my main pain point

Initial testing is positive. 1Password opens and unlocks quickly. Browser overall seems more responsive - some of that might be due to creating a new profile for testing though. I'll keep trying it out.

I was just coming to report my experiences with github in Orion with 1Password:

Good news, anecdotally (sample size 2) it doesn't seem any worse off than Safari! On one big PR (143 files, ++8k --2.5K) it still has the classic Webkit "Wait for two seconds while the textarea renders and 1password hooks into it". I really wish either the Webkit folks or Github would do something about their transform-based layout, it runs like hot garbage on non-chromium.

In other hot garbage news, I forgot how smooth Orion's video playback is.. almost looks unnatural compared to Chromium/Arc

Testing new build, Firefox 1password. Works as expected, and overall performance has been improved. Chrome version of 1Password does not open when clicked on. Firefox does not support the Passkeys as do Chrome Verion.

DBLClick So I also had this issue with my Orion profile - for whatever reason the Primary profile (the one that's synced across devices) just won't let me interact with the 1pass extension at all. I had to create a fresh profile (manage profiles -> new -> clean preset) for it to let me interact with the extension
