1Password causes major performance degradation

When I found that there was a blessed integration with 1Password, which is essential to me, I started using Orion as my primary browser about two weeks ago, and it seems slower / more sluggish vs. the other browsers I use. I started It feels like it lags even when just typing into entry fields. This became even more noticeable after I installed a second extension, Google Voice.

I did some testing using https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/ on my MacBook Pro M1 with 16 GB of RAM.

I created a new profile with no extensinos in 0.99.136-beta, turned on compatibility mode, and ran the https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/ test. This time I got a very healthy 31.6.

I then went back to my normal profile and turned off my two extensions: 1Password and Google Voice. I then reran https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/ again got 31.6. So new profile and compatibility mode were not impactful.

I then re-enabled 1Password, restarted the browser, and ran the test again. Performance plummeted 60% to 12.7.

I then added the Google Voice extension in addition to 1Password, and performance fell further, to 10.0.

Interestingly, ran the test in a fresh Orion browser with JUST the Google Voice extension, I again got our benchmark 31.6.

I then switched to 0.99.136-rc, in my normal profile, with both extensions turned off. I got the same 31.6 that -beta got in a new profile and my usual profile, with no extensions. The test result: 12.1.

Adding Google Voice back in addition to 1Password, I got 9.49.

Summary: 1Password causes a major performance degradation, which increases with additional extensions that do not in themselves alter performance. And, the -rc seems to perform a bit worse than -beta.

Since using extensions like 1Password are an integral part of the daily browser usage for many users, I highly recommend at least one person from Kagi sign up for 1password (they have a 14 day free trial period) and test it out for yourselves with multiple extensions active (and hopefully fix it).

For me personally, not having 1Password available as an extension is a non-starter for my daily browser. (Yes, I know about % + backslash, but that is not the ergonomics I want.)

Note that this is with 1Password 8.11.8.40 (it is the latest), installed via Tools / Extensions / Popular Extensions.

To get some comparision data, I ran the same https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/ test on Safari 18.6 with no extensions on the same machine as described above and got 31.1.

I then installed the latest 1Password extension (8.11.8.40) for Safari and got 25.5. So a degredation of 18%, which is a lot less than the 60% I observed in orion.

I als tried the latest Brave 1.82.161 (Chromium: 140.0.7339.80) with no extensions and got a speedomeeter result of 32.3. I then ran with the latest 1password 8.11.8.40 and got 23.3, or a 28% degredation. Turning on all the 9 of my extensions and it fell only a little more to 26.6.

So, bottom line, yes 1Password is a piggie of an extension, but Orion gets much worse degredation with it than Brave and Safari, and I've nevered noticed typing lag with 1Password on in those other browsers.

I've noticed the same. With only 1Password installed (latest) I get a score of 13.5, if I simply disable the extension and open a new window I get a score of 38.5. This is the single most frustrating thing about using Orion for me, it just feels sluggish and unresponsive; but having the 1Password extension is a must for me so I've dealt with it so far.

With 1Password enabled, Console gets spammed on OSX. This causes launchd to run at 30% CPU.

Uninstalling the extension stops the logging spam.

I noticed some performance issues on "kagi.com" when I have 1Password installed:

0.99.136.1-rc is no better on this front. Without any extensions I get 29.8 on Speedometer 3.1, and with just 1password installed, I get 11.8. :-(

I have this same problem. On Version 0.99.136.1-rc (WebKit 623.1.8.0.0)

When I deactivate the 1Password extension, the browserbench.org 3.1 performance reaches a result of 35-38.
With the extension, 13-16.

Just to add some data—On a new M4 Pro 14", the Speedometer 3.1 test results in 21.2 with the 1Password extension enabled, and 44.5 with the extension disabled.

One interesting test, !(https://) blocked Browserbench.org instead of disabling 1password in the Website settings for 1Password. Got the same performance boost as in disabling. ![](https://)

I'm on I'm on 0.99.136.4-rc and the browser becomes profoundly slow and choppy when filling out some forms (e.g. on a store's checkout page) with the 1Password extension. And like the original poster said, disabling 1Password is a nonstarter.

Still seeing a big performance issue on Version 0.99.138-beta (WebKit 623.1.8.0.0). BrowserBench on my M1 Mac goes from 30.3 down to 7.94.

I did test this on Firefox too and Firefox only sees a 2x performance drop with 1Password enabled (rather than close to 4x as in Orion), so I think there is something uniquely slow about Orion's extension integration into WebKit that needs looking at.

I agree. This issue is unfortunately the main reason why I can't currently use Orion as a main browser, no matter how much I would love to (I'm using Firefox right now).

Since this degradation is so impactful that it kills performance & Macbook battery, I have shifted back to using Safari as the main daily driver. Happy to use KAGI, but ORION fell behind :-(

ReneB I switched to Brave. Orion is no longer usable in its current state. Between that and the script and PDF problem, I can no longer use it professionally, only for personal testing. This is frustrating, because I am a paying user. I am happy to support the project, but this is suicide.

Result

60% performance reduction
4x increase in variance (which explains the jittery feeling I'm seeing)
Anecdote: with 27 tabs open it takes 2-3s to switch tabs

Is anyone from the Orion team actively looking into this? I love the Kagi / Orion mission and I don't regret supporting it, but this should be a priority fix ahead of any new features IMO.
