I have been using Orion for almost a year now, and my biggest gripe has been that the performance is not on par with any flagship browser to the point that some websites are completely unusable.
The performance issues I'm about to describe are specific to desktop: I have not experienced any issues on mobile.
- First, the number of tags affects performance. If I have too many tabs open on content heavy websites, Orion begins to lag significantly across tabs.
- Second, Orion's content loading is far more laggy and janky than any other browser. This becomes painfully evident if I site loads a lot of remote content via JS, but it's also evident with image loading.
To demonstrate the above, go to Wayfair.com from the mega menu select something like "Dining Tables" and do a search and scroll. You'll notice a lag and jank as more content loads on the page. Now open many, many products in new tabs. You'll notice the lag and jank gets worse. Tab switching also slows. Even worse, you might cause Orion to crash.
I first noticed issues like this on Github and submitted a different issue. The response correctly was that Github doesn't play well with WebKit--fair. The issues I'm describing here though seem to exclusively affect Orion. Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all handle Wayfair as expected even with tens of tabs open.
I'm really rooting for Orion: it's my goto browser on iOS, and I love that the browser works perfectly within the Apple ecosystem. But I've grown tired enough that I'm opening Firefox to browse some sites, and I'm reconsidering whether or not I really need bookmark sync between my phone and my desktop.
I expect Wayfair, Amazon, and the rest of the web to be as performant on Orion as Safari.
