Disabling JavaScript on a per-site basis doesn’t work

It seems that when I try to disable JavaScript for just one website, the website continues to run with JavaScript enabled. If I disable it globally, it is correctly disabled, but for all websites.

To reproduce:

Go to a webpage that uses JavaScript, observe that Javascript works,
Tap the site’s favicon to open the menu → Website Settings → Toggle off “Enable Javascript”
Close the menu, reload, and observe that Javascript still works.

I expect that toggling JavaScript off for an individual site should disable Javascript for that site and no other sites.

Hi matt-lebl, thank you for taking the time to report this issue!

I also have inconclusive observations with https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/is-javascript-enabled/ and I can't understand all of it just yet.
The huffpost.com is horrendous for many reasons, one of them could be JS too 😅

Do you have more example websites where the JS behaviour is not what you'd expect? Thais could help me narrow down the issue.

I was able to reproduce that behavior on https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/is-javascript-enabled/
However, after testing another site, in this case, jsfiddle.net, I am not sure whether whatismybrowser or Orion is the one misbehaving.

laiz Thank you for looking at this with me! Another example is huffpost.com, which loads a script in some obfuscated fashion to break the site when content (ad) blocking is enabled, even with javascript turned off. I'm unfortunately not skilled enough to parse out exactly what mechanisms it uses to do this. 🙁
