Cmd+T opens new pages in the wrong tabs

On iPads, having more than one tab is very difficult. Attempts to open multiple tabs lead to the original page being overwritten with the new URL.

I'm having the same issue, but to clarify, it only happens with Cmd+T. If I use the + icon, everything seems to work as expected.

Generally the tab management in iPad with keyboard has been very problematic. I faced the problem you report.

where switching tabs by cmd+number does really change the content of the tab.

And as other user wrote here, this is only on CMD+key, clicking with fingers works perfectly fine.

Bug Description

When using Command+T to create a new tab, the URL bar correctly receives focus in the new tab based on the setting. However, when entering a URL and pressing Enter, the website loads in the previously active tab instead of the new tab.

Steps to Reproduce

Have at least one tab open in Orion
Press Command+T to create a new tab
Observe that a new tab is created and URL bar is focused
Type a URL in the address bar
Press Enter to navigate

Expected Behavior

The website should load in the newly created tab.

Actual Behavior

The website loads in the previous tab, while the new tab remains empty.

Workaround

After creating the new tab with Command+T, you can fix the focus issue by:

Unfocusing the URL bar (tap elsewhere or press Escape) and then refocusing on it (tap the URL bar or press Command+L)
Alternatively: Press Escape followed by Command+L to unfocus and refocus the URL bar

After this workaround, entering a URL works as expected and loads in the correct new tab.

Impact

This breaks the expected workflow when opening multiple websites and makes tab management confusing.

Additional Notes

This issue appears to be specific to the keyboard shortcut workflow and the initial focus state.

The website should load in the newly created tab.

Bumping this thread!

When using my iPad’s keyboard, whenever I open a new tab (cmd+t) whatever I input into the “Search of enter website” dialog effects the previous tab instead. Bug is fixed by manually clicking the dialogue, then inputting my query — but this is annoying. I’m running the uBlock Origin extension, but otherwise my Orion browser is unmodded.

Ideally, I would like to hit cmd+t, immediately input my link or search engine query, and have my input effect the new tab and not the previous one.

Following up: in the just-released beta, this is resolved! I can hit Cmd+T to create a new tab, immediately enter a URL into the omnibar, and get the requested resources in the correct tab.

Replicating

With a keyboard connected to the iPad…
Open any random tab
Use the command+T shortcut to open a new tab
Do NOT focus off of the text box/click anything else
Type in a URL/search query
Instead of performing the search on the current tab, it will instead perform it on the old tab and overwrite it. You will be left with a new tab that is on your startpage, and your old tab will be replaced 🙁

An example input sequence could be:

Open up a tab (e.g YouTube)
Cmd+T+”hello world”+<enter>
Observed effect would be that, after pressing enter, the YouTube tab has the “hello world” search, and the new tab is just a blank tab/start page.

Brand new Orion install on an iPad Pro, when I hit cmd+T the UI shows a new blank tab as being active and the blank tab page, but if I type in a URL then hit enter, the tab that previously had focus is the one that changes to that URL.

On running Orion 1.3.26 (9) (WebKit 8622.1.22.10.8) on iPad OS26 beta 4 (not 18)
There is a strange behavior when I open a new tab with Cmd-T. The cursor focuses on the url entry (which is great) but when I enter a search (Kagi is the default search engine), the result opens in the previous tab instead of the newly created.
I attached a screenshot video.

I expected to have the result of the search in the newly created tab.

running orion on ipad; already one tab open; opening another tab by cmd+t and directly entering a url; hitting enter to load. url loads not in the newly opened tab, but in the ony already existing in the background. seems to be a focus error of the app; focus seems still to be on the first tab, even though a new one is opened.
Only way to circumvent is to open new tab, click in the tab window (seems to set the focus), then again in the url, entering the url, then it opens in the new, correct tab. very annoying bug…
