Higher CPU usage in Orion than in Safari
- Edited
BusterKeaton Unable to reproduce.
I am going to guess that it is caused by one of the extensions you installed but you provided so very little infomration that it is hard to make a better guess. Please follow the bug template in the future or refer to https://help.kagi.com/orion/support-and-community/bug-reporting.html
Another thing you can try is to File -> Reset Orion.
I have also noticed this since the latest update (Version 0.99.121-beta), I have attached a screen recording, comparing Safari to Orion when watching the same YouTube video, in the same quality.
That being said, the increase in CPU usage since the most recent update has not only been while watching YouTube videos, I have noticed an increase in battery usage overall, which I assume to be the fault of increased CPU usage whilst browsing generally.
Like I said, I have only noticed this since the latest update and everything prior to that update has been perfect, Orion has been the most battery efficient browser I have ever used.
I'm running MacOS 12.4 on a MacBook Air (M1, 2020), if there is any other information/logs I can provide please let me know.
I have been experiencing a lot of extra heat and fan noise when watching YouTube on Version 0.99.121-beta (WebKit 614.1.20) on my 2019 Intel MBP. 4K videos even stutter. Switching from the iGPU to the dGPU allows the videos to play without stuttering, but at the cost of excessive heat/fan noise.
Steps to reproduce:
<Include steps to reproduce the bug; Did you try using Compatibility mode? If applicable, does Safari behave in the same way?>
Whenever I play a youtube video on Orion the battery usage is ridculously high. I have 3 extensions installed and even once they are uninstalled the same results occur. Safari does not experience this level of battery usage.
Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Version 0.99.121-beta (WebKit 614.1.20)
MacBook Air (macOS Ventura 13.0 build 22A380)

It got worse I have no idea why. I thought Firefox was a battery hog too.
I got Orion specifically because it is not a battery hog lol which is why I'm so confused why this is happening. I think what is happening is when I import my info from safari the battery usage skyrockets. I don't know why this would be causing an issue.
Steps to reproduce:
Open acrivity monitor & see Orion Web Content (Prewarmed) consumption.
]Orion is unusually consuming alot of CPU resoruces & heating up laptop even when watching a youtube video.
Orion, OS version; hardware type:
macos ventura, Macbook Pro 14"

I have the exact same problem. My computer got ridiculously hot from one youtube tab.
Verfied just being on a youtube video page (video doesn't have to be playing) spikes the CPU. Each tab on a youtube video page increases the CPU usage even more.
Same problem on my M1 Mac mini it is hammering the cpu and heating up more than normal.

Please try with previous release and let us know the CPU/energy issuesituation (this will tell us if 121 broke something)

The same behaviour occurs for me either on 120.1 or 121 on Ventura 13.0 with 2021 MBP M1 Pro when playing a youtube video or simply having a tab open.
However, it seems to me that being signed in to my youtube account (and/or a non-private window) actually brings out the issue. See the screenshots.
Safari 16.1 and Orion 121 side by side. Both private windows, not signed in.
Safari 16.1 and Orion 121 side by side. Both private windows, both signed in.
Safari 16.1 and Orion 120 side by side. Safari private windows, Orion not, both signed in.
A non-private window seems to exerbate the issue. No clue why the Viewport is different. I tried to make the windows the exact same size.
I have no extensions beside Dark Reader installed and that was deactivated via the compatibility Mode (and/or in the menu), I could not see a significant difference either way. Sorry for all the screenshots, I actually had more, for all the permuations but I hope that is enough .
Thanks for the (otherwise) awesome browser, I am enjoying the hell out of it!
It seems that it has nothing to do with the latest release (121). What is strange is that so many people found the problem now and not with the previous release.
Our plan is to update to a newer version of WebKit and test with this.
