I imagine this one might be controversial, or not overly popular, but I just wanted to note there's some argument FOR this kind of feature, for those wanting to DeGoogle, but also where Apple Maps can actually now be superior to Google (it's possible, outside of the US!)

While ReMap for Safari is available https://apps.apple.com/au/app/remap-for-safari/id1436676210?mt=12 of course Orion only supports Chrome/Firefox extensions and those audiences are less likely to want such an extension.

I already have this enabled on Mac and iOS for Safari, where it's obviously even more relevant β€” even if someone sends me a Google Maps link, I don't need it installed or have to use the web version to navigate.

I can see this is a relatively niche feature, but as a Mac-specific browser I can see argument for Orion considering this feature, and from a strategic stand point (re Kagi search) it might be good to help said users not being drawn back into Google's orbit.

One could expect DuckDuckGo's upcoming browser will, if not re-routing Google Maps, at least try to favour location searches to their Maps UI (which is of course a web frontend for Apple Maps.)

transeunt It feels like a job for an extension honestly as the use case is very specific and something I would imagine less than 0.01% of users would want.

And Google maps these days appears only if you go to it, intentionally.

Yes, I do agree in principle, although I noted reasons why a privacy respecting browser might consider it.

…and I'm a bit sceptical about getting a browser extension that'll work in Orion, but that's my problem.

Guess I need to go ask the ReMap for Safari author if he'd ever consider a Chrome extension! πŸ˜„

FWIW β€” it seems ReMap is the only desktop Safari Extension for this but there are a couple others that are iOS-only (where IMHO it does make more sense), e.g. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mapper-for-safari/id1589391989

All of these have high ratings, so that suggests some user interest, but I take your point it's fairly niche.

joystmp ah thanks. True that's probably the most pragmatic way for me to get what I want! πŸ˜„

That's not necessarily the most user/newb-friendly option, but given the argument this is too niche a suggestion, I'll take it for now. πŸ‘
