When opening/creating a new tab in Safari the URL field is activated. Orion misses this feature (or anyway, it doesn’t work in my latest version install).
If the field would be activated for keyboard input it would make for quicker browsing because you can start typing a URL or search term in the new tab ‘New Tab’, hit enter and you’re go.
If I understood your request correctly, you should be able to get that by going to the preferences of Orion → Tab → enabling Show keyboard on New Tab. From there, the focus is automatically on the location bar.

I'm wondering if it would be possible for Orion to recognise (like Safari does) when there is a external keyboard connected. After researching your answer, I found out that Safari focusses the URL input field when a keyboard is connected and doesn't when there's no keyboard connected.
Maybe there is a system API that Orion could use to do the same?
It is of minor importance, there are other more important things to fix, maybe for the longlist.
