New tab shortcut, start typing a known pre-existing tab (site name, title of the article, etc) - browser offers you jump/switch to the pre-existing tab (an expected behavior). However, this leaves an empty tab in your tab list once you jump to the tab you are interested in.
If using the "jump/switch to tab" the new empty tab should be closed - this is how every other competing browser uses jump/switch to tab to act if you start with an empty tab (Firefox, Zen, Safari, Arc, Brave, Sigma) - otherwise, you will have a list of empty tabs every time you use the new tab and start typing the address bar the article/tab you want to switch to.
