  • Why do these two websites chew a lot of CPU time for no obvious reason?

I was exploring podcats earlier today and noticed these two were chewing up most of the CPU on my laptop but they seem relatively static:

Just going to the 2nd website drives 1 of my CPU to >80% and drives WindowServer another >30% even before I start streaming/playing.

I also noticed they don't do this in Safari but even if they did I don't see what they are doing that requires much CPU at all (active video streaming usually uses less CPU).

I would expect them to use <2% CPU. Playing one of the podcast episodes in Safari uses <2% CPU on my relatively slow Intel i3 system while Orion + WindowServer is >100% just having that web page open.

I think there are two issues here:

  1. What are those websites doing that is driving Orion to consume over 1 CPU in total?
  2. Even if those web pages are doing something stupid, can Orion handle them as efficiently as Safari?

Version 0.99.128.2.1-rc (WebKit 619.1.11.111.2) Build date Aug 4 2024 MacBook Air (macOS Catalina 10.15.7 build 19H2026)

Catalina (10.15)

I am able to reproduce the unusually high CPU usage on those two sites when using Orion. Safari and Safari TP work as expected so there is something wrong on Orion's end.

I am still having similar issues on Orion 0.99.129-beta (WebKit 619.1.11.111.2). In particular, for GitHub and Duolingo.
