I noticed lately that watching some Youtube videos full-screen results in a noticable flicker. I don't see a flicker viewing the same videos on the same machine with Mojave's Safari.

Here is a video capture from my (very old) phone:

Note that Stats for Nerds needs to be off and I've only noticed the flicker in full-screen mode with the player controls hidden (i.e. with the cursor off to the side so they autohide). The flicker appears to be some interaction with the autohide/autodimming.

I have not seen this flicker when viewing the same content with Orion under Catalina but that's also a different hardware/configuration (retina laptop screen versus external 1080p TV)

I expected the video to play in full-screen similar to Safari on the same machine and generally with no flicker not in the content.

Compatability mode doesn't make a difference. However, have noticed a few more things that may help narrow this down:
-Not be limited to Mojave -- just more visible on my system conected to Mojave
-Problem goes away when I turn off Ambient Mode in Youtube Settings
-Ambient Mode is not visible on my Catalina system when not in Dark Mode (becomes available when I set Youtube's Appearence to Dark Mode)
-On laptop running Catalina with Google's Appearence set to Dark Mode and Ambient Mode left on (the default) and player controls autohidden, I do see flicker though it is somewhat muffled by LCD

Also it may be content dependent (probably because of interaction with Ambient Mode and Dark Mode). Out of three tries, two videos from unrelated sources triggered it and one didn't. This is one that did:

As such what should trigger it is the following combination:
-Dark Mode On (whether as a Mac system setting or a Youtube Appearence override)
-Select video content that oscillates some Ambient Mode related screen adjustment
    -Ambient Mode On (default)
    -Full Screen
-Player controls allowed to autohide and no other Youtube diagnostics (e.g. Stats for Nerds)

While that seems esoteric that is basically my default viewing mode for Youtube content (i.e. Dark Mode, full-screen, player controls autohide, other settings left to default which leaves Ambient Mode on). I can however easily turn off Ambient Mode as a workaround.

While not limited to Mojave unclear if issue persits past Catalina. Will try Monterey when I get a chance to test further.

bzgnyc FYI I wasn't able to reproduce this under Monterey so assuming this is a Mojave/Catalina-specific bug (and may be an issue under High/Sierra if release for that OS goes forward). In the grand scheme of Mojave/Catalina-specific bugs, I would put this at the bottom of my list as it can be worked around by turning off Ambient Mode in Youtube.

I am still experiencing this and it's not limited to youtube.com.

It's easier to see on my second monitor but it also persists with my main macbook display.
I've tried unplugging the second display but the flickering persists.

I stumbled upon this thread however
      https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252681783

Which seems to fix the problem for me, whether that's temporary or not I don't know yet but checking the option on/off and the flickering goes away, so maybe it is a macOS bug after all... unfortunately my Macbook is too old to be able to upgrade, so I can't check whether that's the case.

I also put my macbook to sleep a lot rather than shutting it down so maybe that's related as well.
