The purpose of this feature:
Currently, if the user encounters a moderately interesting link, they have to open it, jump through all the cookie banners, newsletter popups etc., and then finally summarize the contents of the page. The burden of this obviously varies by site, but the above is often the case. This in turn makes me hesitant to open links that could be interesting.
In short, the ability to summarize the contents of a link without actually opening it would come with the following benefits:
- increased privacy
- increased efficiency, removing unnecessary steps from the users' workflows
- making the summarize feature more accessible and more easily discoverable, providing added value for Kagi subscribers
The only potential issue is that the link context menu is getting a bit crowded:
Still, I believe adding "Summarize Link" is more valuable than some of the current options, if the number of options is deemed problematic.
Simple description of how this feature would work:
- The user discovers an interesting link they want to summarize
- They right click it, and select "Summarize Link"
- The summarizer side bar opens (as is the case when user wants to summarize the contents of the current page)
- The user has now avoided several unnecessary steps thanks to Orion and Kagi
