In order to close the only tab in an iPad window, you have to either open the tab view or open another tab so that the tab bar shows.
Maybe show the tab bar even when there is only one tab?
Safari has this same problem when using a separate tab bar, but a close tab button is present on the only tab when using the compact tab bar.
