steps:

  1. start with normal tabs
  2. enable focus mode
  3. switch to compact tabs
  4. disable focus mode
  5. switch to normal tabs.

alternatively, start with compact tabs, and repeat same process, but swap normal and compact tabs.

fixed by toggling focus mode.
