Due to #6912 I had to disable sync back in December.
Today as of 20 Feb I tried to enable it back on macOS.
The result is, well, surprising.

  1. The browser got stuck for decent time displaying beach ball of death.
  2. I noticed some new tabs appearing and froze in horror.
  3. As soon as I could I've turned the sync off.
  4. As a result, I've got 500+ tabs opened across 2 windows (even the one window that didn't exist since I turned off the sync!!)

It seems that it's not the tabs that are synced but the history elements, which become tabs for some reason. I don't know how it works internally and which control of the thing you have but I doubt this should work like this, tabs are tabs, history is history.

I dunno how to decouple this issue into more atomic ones as I don't know where to start with, the whole thing seems so broken.

A few suggestions:

  1. Consider making the orion folder visible under "iCloud Drive" as other app folders: GarageBand, Pages, Shortcuts. So we can at least inspect it and probably even wipe it.
  2. Consider displaying sync info in settings: Last sync time, devices, how many tabs/stuff open at the moment
  3. Consider adding control buttons:
    1) Wipe the sync state (overall, for current device)
    2) Force push current device's orion state (like for my case, I haven't used the sync for months so I don't care what's in there for my current device)

Haarolean This is localised issue (as most users use sync with no problems as you see by the lack of reports on sync issues). As such it is incredibly hard to debug and I have no ideas apart to suggest you to reset orion and enable sync.

@Vlad aight, but can we consider the features I suggested? Having no control of the process makes it worse
