joystmp changed the title to UBlock Origin doesn't work, sometimes .

I have the issue of cosmetic/static filtering not being enabled on initial page load and requires a reload of the page similar to what users have mentioned abov.

@Vlad do you want me to open a new but report specifically for cosmetic/static filtering not being enabled on uBO until the page is reloaded?

For some reason it's being ignored, while being a major issue with one of the advertised features. Don't get me wrong, the browser is great but the fact that there is no progress on this issue, not even acknowledgement, is frustrating.

REB00T Not sure why you chose to ignore all the progress that team has made with the browser. There are 2000 open issues on this forum, this is not even the largest one.

        https://kagi.com/orion/updates/orion-release-notes.html

The reason we prioritised other things over this one, is that uBO works reasonably well already and there are many other features that users request with much more passion that this one.

Vlad In all fairness, while the team has made absolutely incredible progress (and that should be commended) this is the highest voted bug and uBlock Origin is a popular extension used by many users. While uBO mostly works, the lack of application of cosmetic & static filtering until page reload is unpleasant. Then again, I understand why it's not a high priority for the team and Orion is still currently beta software. Additionally, the built-in content blocker works for most users. I do expect that this bug will eventually be fixed in tandem with other fixes to related extension bugs in a future update.

New user, I'd like to add my voice to the choir. uBlock doesn't filter cosmetic until page refresh. I appreciate that the dev team is small, and Orion otherwise seems lovely, but this is such a pain for me I'm back to Firefox until it's fixed.

catbonnyh can you please try disabling Orion's built-in adblocker, as I suspect, all the ads are getting blocked by internal adblocker, so ubo is not getting any.

uBlock Origin (1.58.0 installed from firefox addons) doesn't block requests (aka displaying a # on the uBO icon) when i duckduckgo anything. it blocks requests on firefox release 127.0.2. see screenshots

                  Vlad

I am experiencing this with default ad blocking behavior, same as several others have already mentioned. It requires refreshing an open tab to get UBlock to actually work.

i have iPhone with las update i just starting using orion and i heard that ublock origin is work good with that browser
but when i installed ublock origin and go to website is not working on current tab it keep showing me ads url and stuck there even i close all tabs and keep only targeted website its weird
                  look at screens

I read somewhere that Orion recommends turning off the built in ad blocking if you want to use Ublock

uBO on ios doesn't work properly

I noticed similar issues. I think the reason is that Orion on iOS supports fewer Web Extension APIs than it does on desktop (see the list below). As far as I know, uBlock Origin makes heavy use of the webRequest API, and this seems to be mostly unsupported on iOS. So I decided for me to use uBlock Origin only with the Mac version and rely on Orion’s built-in content blocking on iOS.

                        3 months later

When using the uBlock Origin browser extension on iPhone or iPad, it is unable to block any ads or trackers on webpages. The displayed interception count always remains at 0. This result is consistent whether downloading the version from Chrome or Firefox's software store.

The Mac version of Orion has average support for Tampermonkey, but fortunately everything works fine when using Violentmonkey. I hope that Orion can better support extensions like uBlock Origin and Tampermonkey, especially on the iPhone and iPad versions.

I have a crash that I can repeat with the latest version of Orion:

                                1. Open Orion (0.99.127.2-beta (WebKit 619.1.1)) with existing tabs in your profile from your last session
                                2. Make sure you have uBlock Origin extension installed (Firefox version, I am running uBlock Origin 1.57.2)
                                3. For some obscure reason having uBlock Origin enabled at the moment, all pages never complete the load (I am not the only one experiencing this, Yum on Discord had it as well)
                                4. I go to Tools > Extensions > Manage Extensions...
                                5. Disable uBlock Origin
                                6. Bam crash

I am attaching the crash log.

I notice that when I re-run Orion, the uBlock Origin is disabled, if I go back to enable it and disable without closing the window, it doesn't crash, so I guess it is related to pages not loading.

                                Expected: Orion should not crash.

Unrelated or related, I don't know, but pages don't load with uBlock Origin enabled right now. Obviously pages should be loading at all times when there is connectivity.

I haven't experienced a crash, but I'm having the same problem where no web pages will load at all with uBlock Origin enabled. (I just started using UBO today so I don't know if it would have ever previously worked.)

In addition, once it's in this state, I can't disable UBO without first closing out Orion and re-opening it. If it's stuck on loading a page, the extension refuses to be disabled.

Also, clicking on the extension icon does nothing; there is no options dialog at all, not even an empty one.

Getting uBlock Origin to work at 100% should have been a priority from the very start

As good as the internal content blocker is it will never deliver the same flexibility and blocking capability as uBO

When uBO works as good as it does in Firefox I will make Orion my daily driver browser

Just tried the new Orion update (0.99.127.3-beta (WebKit 619.1.1)) and it's still crashing, and infinitely loading websites with uBlock Origin enabled.

frin is this reproducible on new clean profile too?

                                      • frin replied to this.

dino interestingly, it's not reproducible in a new clean profile.

You gave me an idea, I uninstalled uBlock Origin in my main profile, then reinstalled it. It is loading websites normally now, and disabling uBlock Origin no longer crashes Orion.

Still, hopefully you can fix the crash bug for anyone else who might be experiencing the issues.

I had the same issue (crashes on disabling, impossible loading of any pages), on the lastest non-paid version of the beta browser (updated few minutes ago). Sent a crash report via the automatic pop-up on browser's restart.
I'll try to uninstall / fresh install uBlock Origin, as it seems to have worked with @frin ...
I hope for a fix, but it is all i can do (i am code illiterate 🙂 ..

I just tried Orion again. I tried a new profile. I tried a clean install of uBo. The exact same error persists.

Fixes to the bug were 'planned for next release' in July of 2023.

@Vlad said in November 2023 that uBO not blocking ads on page load is new information to him.

catch-22 replied saying this has been the exact issue since 2021.

As Anatomy5803 said, this is the highest voted bug in Orion.

It's 2025, this thread is now derailed with people talking about how uBO doesn't work on the iOS version of Orion. It's still not fixed on the MacOS release after four years.

We get it - beta, small team, limited resources. But this has been known for a long time. We've all gone out of our way to show different ways to reproduce it.

I don't think it's crazy to ask if there are plans to address this issue, as it approaches its fifth birthday.

                                                vapor

I noticed that for me it was only happening on a new tab/window.
So I changed "new window/tab open with" from Start Page to Empty Page, which seems to have fixed it.

Could also reproduce it again by switching it back to Start Page.
It does not matter if you click on something on the start page or manually enter something in the URL bar.
Looks like loading a page from the Start Page breaks the adblockers somehow.

I've just tested this out and and it works for me too. uBO works with adblock and cosmetic blockers if a page is opened from a blank page.

However, if the site is opened from the Start Page, or any other webpage, the problem as described (needing to refresh the page before uBO will block ads and apply cosmetic filters) persists.

Edit: Just tried on the latest Orion+ RC. Issue persists.

newtoorion unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a priority as they're focussing on the built-in adblocker. It puzzles me a bit as I don't get why you wouldn't just support the golden standard in adblocking and be done with it, especially when Orion's USP has always been being able to install Chrome/Firefox extensions.

The built in adblocker that Orion is working on should also provide better performance than uBlock Origin. uBlock Origin uses its own network filtering engines through the webRequest API, whereas Orion's built in adblocker converts filter list syntax rules to WebKit based content blocking rules (json format) which are internally represented as a deterministic finite state machine which is in linear time, other "advanced" rules are executed in scriptlets and/or extended css. But given that, the team will be moving away from using AdGuard's scriptlets/extended-css as well as their SafariConverterLib because they're GPLv3 licensed, so they will have to create or find another alternative which is a huge challenge.

This brings us back to where we started, once the team removes the native ad-blocking feature, unless they find a replacement quick enough, which is a huge gigantic endeavor, uBlock Origin will be your best bet. But for now, the built in ad-blocker is good, albeit it will be replaced and re-written.

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense.

I added my custom filters and adlists to the native blocker - it's a bit of a pain, and it's definitely harder to just hide an annoying element. But at least it works.

Just out of interest, why will the team have to remove this internal adblocker and rebuild it?

And if so... why not just work on getting uBO working as it does on Chromium/Firefox based browsers? As a lay person, this is very confusing.
