It’s hard to reproduce because all you need to do is switch to Orion after it’s been in background for a while (long uptime, many system sleeps). After that, the system stops responding. Beachball rolls in a distinctively janky way (occasionally freezing completely). Interestingly, a copy of pre-beachball default cursor occasionally remains wherever the cursor was at the moment of the crash. You can still lock screen (by closing the lid or tapping the power button), but it will never unlock. I waited for up to 1 hour one time, but by now it’s just hard restart.
Side info and why I’m 80% sure Orion is at fault:
- this started happening 1–2 times per week after I switcehd to Orion again (now at Version 0.99.126.4-beta)
- this crash mode is very distinctive, and never happened until this December
- this crash never happened yet when Orion is not running
- this crash happens when almost nothing else except Orion is running. I’m yet to have a scenario when there’s only Orion open, because I tend to use my laptop for multiple things
- macOS has not crashed for me probably in the entire year in any other way than this, it’s generally exceptionally reliable and the laptop is near new
My setup:
- macOS 13.6.3 (22G436)
- I don’t use and have never used any extensions
- At today’s crash time, there was one profile of Orion with 3 windows and about 100 tabs total, hardly something out of ordinary
I’d expect the app would not crash my system.
