For example, when you're listening to music in a background tab and start watching a video in the active tab, instead of having the audio of both playing at the same time, the background audio would automatically mute and only the audio of the active tab would be playing.

Ideally, the background audio could also pause instead of mute, which should be technically feasible as well, I think.

This is just an idea regarding a small annoyance I encounter relatively often. I don't think any browser has such a feature yet.

cyzyvos changed the title to Automatically mute (or pause) background tabs when audio starts playing in the active tab .

How should it work if for example, I use Google Meet + YouTube at the same time?

If you have a meeting (where someone is speaking) in a background tab and you start playing a youtube video (with audio) in the foreground, the tab with the meeting would get muted. If you have youtube (with active audio) playing in the background, and you join a meeting where someone is speaking, youtube would get muted (or paused).

I was thinking that this should be similar to how bluetooth headphones work when they are connected to two devices – starting audio on one device pauses the audio on the other device.

I'm not sure if there are any situations where I'd want to have two audio sources playing at the same time, but I'd still suggest that this should be an optional feature.

cyzyvos Demostrating a video in a meating still a thing, and if someone wants to ask you something, they probably don't want to be muted

that would be a case for the feature to be turned off. I'm not saying this should be the default behavior. Personally, I've never been in a situation where I had to share a video by sharing my screen in a meeting.
