  • Orion opens ALL of my tabs from my saved tab groups even if the website isn't loaded on the tab group

  • BugsDesktopDone

Steps to reproduce:
For example, I have a tab group for my media arts research, saving it for later or when I need it (there is like 30 tabs saved) instead of using the bookmarks.

When I import my Safari information, including my tab groups. And it opens EVERY SINGLE TAB AND TAB GROUPS, slowing my Macbook WAY down and even have to force quit when it just sits there.

Is there any way where the tab groups, kinda like save a URL from a tab group and won't open it till I go to the tab group and visit the website.

Expected behavior:
Save URL info from my tab groups and won't open every single tab group website till I open the tab group itself.

Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Orion 0.99 (125)
macOS Sonoma 14.0
Macbook Air M1

GradyBlue This only happens on Import? It could be a bug with import as it should behave like opening any other window, where we load only the current tab.

I am assuming you are not doing import every day?

In normal use Orion will only open a window and one tab.

Vlad No, I'm not importing daily. It's usually with a new import from a fresh browser. But usually, it will only open my current tab(s) instead of my saved tab groups (just like Safari, it have the saved tab groups, but won't open them at once till I open the select tab group)

GradyBlue I am not completely following what the issue is. Can you outline the differene between Orion and Safari when importing data from a third party browser?

Vlad My apologies. Here's an example if I were to buy a new MacBook:

          1. When you fully setup the device and all that, you go to Safari and open a fresh new page.
          2. Notice that it doesn't open ALL the saved tab groups in front of you. Instead, they're in the background waiting for you to open a select tab group.
          3. When I am ready to open a tab group, it will load/reload all the pages saved and uses that.

          Here's a video example:

What happened? How did it happen? What are the steps to replicate the issue.
TL;DR Orion opened all sites of all my safari tab groups after the import which exceeded my 16 GB of memory thus causing extrem slowdowns.

I don't know if this is a bug but it certainly was an unforeseen an incomprehensible behaviour for me.

I installed Orion via the Orion for Mac v0.99.124 Installer on my MacBookPro18,3 with macOS 12.7.

After the fresh installation I had only one tab open; the "start tab" after where I was asked If I'd like to import from Safari. I wanted to import everything so I went along (this already took suspiciously long). After finishing the import I opened a second tab to go to youtube and it took for ever to interact with Orion. After deciding that this is unbearable I quit Orion and was prompted with a note that 300+ site were open and would be re-opened the next time Orion is lounged.

            So my questions are:

            1. How can I import from Safari without creating this scenario again?
            2. How can I open Orion without opening all 300+ sites again?
            3. Why does Orion open all my tab group sites in the first place?

            thanks in advance!

What did you expect to happen? Describe the desired functionality.
Stabel import and a blazing fast browser experience as promoted : )

What version of Orion are you running?
            0.99

Merged 1 post from Extreme slowdown because 300+ sites open after import from Safari.

Vlad Thank's for merging. Please correct me here, but I think the linked article does actually tell the direct opposite to what you are saying:

"I then built three saved tab groups, each containing ten pages. This makes essentially no difference to the app’s memory requirements until those tab groups are accessed, as Safari only loads tabs in its tab groups on demand."

"Until you access them, the effect of many pages in unopened tab groups is minimal and similar to these referred to by bookmarks."

So one could of course say that when you open Safari it kind of "opens" all your saved tab groups kind of in the background. However, "opening" for me means "consuming memory". So I wouldn't say that safari opens all the tab groups and I think this is also what @GradyBlue meant. And @GradyBlue referring to your third point: It also does not load all the saved tabs of a tab group like you said. It only opens the first one (although it seems to save miniature screenshots(?) all tabs to make it appear when you hover over a tab; so this might consume a little bit of memory for each tab). I just checked that myself and this is also what can be derived from the article:

"What I then did was to open each of those 30 tabs in their groups, ensuring that the pages all loaded, [...]"

The issues I had was that after the initial import of all Safari "things" (excluding Passwords) Orion opened my 40 imported tab groups as 40 separate windows and probably loading at least every first tab, meaning at least 40 tabs. I dare to say "at least" because having 40 tabs open (or rather loaded for that matter) is no issue in Safari and having read about how fast and memory efficient Orion would be (I am new to Orion you must know) I don't believe it should be for Orion. So maybe it even actually loaded every tab summing up to 300+ tabs? I don't know about that. It might just be the 40 different windows each kind of semi-opening (sorry for my layman's terms here!) 5 - 20 tabs.

I worked around the issue now by waiting for Orion to re-open all 40 Windows (I had previously force-closed Orion after the initial import because it was so laggy and slow) and than closing all Windows manually. Now Orion does behave like Safari: After starting it, it opens (in my case) a blank tab and I can choose my saved tab group and it loads into memory only the tabs I click on and also keeps them in memory when switching back and forth between tab groups - which is what the your mentioned article, @Vlad , wants to make aware of and which I actually find very handy. When I'm done working on several tab groups I simply go back to the one I need or I make sure to have only one blank window open and than I quickly close and re-open Safari to dump all afore used tabs / tab groups out of memory : )

adkiem We did change this behavior and will not open windows for imported tab groups.
