Currently icons in the toolbar become smaller when compact mode is enabled. However, the shorter height of the toolbar is still large enough to contain the icons at their full size. I suggest maintaining the original size, and only shrinking the search box. This will mean less vertical whitespace between the toolbar icons, but will look consistent with the rest of the UI, especially when using vertical tabs. The icons will have the same tap-targets, but fill more of the space. This change would make the icons easier to read, without making the compact toolbar larger.
