Steps to reproduce:

  • Have a bunch of suspended tabs
  • Click on tab overview button
  • They will all load up

Expected behavior:

  • That those tabs will not load, and save my battery.

Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Version 0.99.124-beta (WebKit 616.1.10)
MacBook Pro (macOS Ventura 13.4 build 22F62)

Perhaps this could be avoided by saving cached previews of open tabs to the disk on exit.

ashp0 OK we should simply not reload tabs in tab overview when low power mode is on.

Vlad What about a title with favicon? Like a tab but way bigger and more information?

Vlad They shouldn't be reloaded regardless of whether or not low power mode is on. On low-RAM systems such as an 8 GB M1 Mac, it can easily cause Orion to consume over 8 GB of virtual memory, which will lead to excessive swap usage as well as general unresponsiveness. It doesn't help that Tab Overview is very easy to trigger accidentally with a trackpad gesture.

Avoozl This could be a question of whether we have a bug with our implementation or not, not whether we should do this. Does safari exhibit same behavior in same circumstances?

Vlad Safari does not reload suspended tabs and instead just displays them as blank tiles. While this is far better than what Orion currently does, it's still not optimal, and showing a cached screenshot (or, if that is not possible, the website's apple-touch-icon) would be even more preferable.
