Both with compatibility mode on and off, installed protonVPN extension from chrome web store. Signning in, filled in details and 2fa, then hit an error.
I tried with chrome and it works:.

I tested this and can confirm this issue. Also, I should note that the extension is listed as incompatible with Orion beta so I couldn't test it there.
VPN extensions overall don't work, regardless of their origin, for now.
I have noticed that the Firefox add-on shows an active VPN connection status although is not working.
Here an example of the issue; even the notification states that I have successfully connected to a VPN server but the IP address does not match.
