Websites unable to load without getting cookies in Compatibility Mode first

Steps to reproduce:

go to Dr.dk or Bt.dk

two major news websites in Denmark that cannot load without getting the cookies first by entering Compatibility Mode, after getting the cookies you can turn Compatibility Mode off and they will work fine.

Entering without cookies just freezes on page:

I suspect theres something about the cookie overlay thing that gets blocked.

I think its important that Orion works on major websites without Compatibility Mode. SigmaOs handles both without problems

Expected behavior:

To give me the option to install cookies with Compatibility Mode off

Looking at the page load, I think this is happening because the consent.cookiebot.com request is being blocked by Orion's own request blocker

If you use this add-on (which isn't necessarily the best solution, as this should work "out the box"), you will get past the consent wall, since it seems to set the cookie to reject consent - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/consent-o-matic

Thanks for looking into it. For me personally it isnt such a big problem (since i know how to get around it). but I think its a problem for Orion mass adoptation if it doesnt just work on major websites, since Compatibility Mode is off by default

I have experienced freinds and family who arent tech savvy, that immediately stops using the browser when it doesnt work on sites like that. not being tracked on the internet isnt only an intrest for tech people.

Im also kinda assuming the problem is the same for both websites i posted. So fixing this would propably fix alot of websites, and not just theese 2 websites that are only relevant to the tiny market of Denmark

Inded, it is a bug if it breaks sites "out the box". This likely applies to other sites using the same cookie wall script.

Not really sure how to fix in a scalable way othern than to remove the ad blocking by default. Few sites not working out of millions is the price to pay. The sites change their scripts and we do not have the resources to play the cat and mouse game. We'd rather be spending time on browsers features and bugs then updating the block lists.

Sure, thats your choice to make. But its a choice that kinda eliminates getting any major adoptation from none tech people in Denmark, since dr.dk is probably the most visited website here.
That might be fine since Denmark is tiny and maybe this isnt for the average consumer

But in the long run if it doesnt get priority, I maybe question the approach of having it on by default, or not coming out of the box with an extension that works better like some other browsers do instead.

People who know there way around browsers install an ad blocking extension

Oh yeah, important note. I only mentioned it is because I tried Sigma Os and there build in ad blocking worked flawlesly on all the sites i had issues with. So that made me think maybe there was a more "easy" way to fix the issues Orion have

I understand that, what I am asking for is what is your proposed solution. How do we do it? Is you ask to remove the ad-blocking in Orion by default, and let users turn it on? That is the only thing that will ensure no sites are ever broken by it by default.

It would be prudent to make a scientific comaprison between the two adblockers. Orion can also work flawlessly if we tone down ad /tracker blocking. Is Sigma letting ads/trackers pass through? We need more than anecdotal experience.

As I said, its up to you to make the priority, and maybe its the right one as of right now.

And yes you are right Sigma did indeed perform alot worse in a adblocking test i did, so thats a bad comparison

Chronium browser with Ublock was about the same as Orion. so the mentioned alternative to prioritising it in the long run, would be to ship with Ublock instead.

All I can do is inform you thats it doesnt seem to work with alot of cookie consent popups, which seems to be a general problem, is it fixable without blocking less stuff? no idea, the websites work fine with blocking after getting the cookies.

I actually checked what was the top 10 most visited websites in Denmark, and 3 out of 10 didnt work. So all I am saying is thats probably a major huddle for wider adaptation here.

Which again, might be fine right now for several reasons, one being Denmark is very small 🙂

also keep in mind, every website it doesnt work on. the user will have no protection, IF they actually know how to turn Compatibility Mode on.

ps, I just noticed that it seems like something changed for dr.dk, so now i cant load it even on compatibility mode. Cookie box just loads over and over. its the same for iOS and RC

Tried restarting, same outcome, no errors in console, very strange
