  • Closing leaves Webcam on in google meet if using keyboard shortcut. (potential memory leak)

  • BugsDesktopPlanned

Steps to reproduce:

  • Open up google meet window.
  • Hit cmd-w to close window.
  • Webcam still on. (as indicated by green hardware light on MacBook)

Looks like cmd-w to close leaves the tab in background without suspending. I've experienced that the webcam light remains on for an hour or more.

Additional context:

  • closing with right click menu sometimes has the issue and sometimes doesnt'
  • right-click and Suspend tab doesn't exhibit this issue.
  • opening a new tab that uses webcam will work (but will exhibit the same issue of not shutting off the webcam)

Expected behavior:

  • Closed tabs should be immediately suspended and webcam should turn off.

Orion, OS version; hardware type:
Version 0.99.123.3-beta (WebKit 615.1.16.1)

aaaah yes that seems to be why meet is broken for me.
    can definitely repro

Notice how the green light stays on at 12 seconds in the video when the tab is closed.

Later in the video the tab is suspended and the light properly shuts off.

edit: Converted video to animated image, added back video

thanks for this, suspending a tab is a nice solution

When visiting a site that uses the webcam, then closing the tab, Orion does not stop/release the webcam.

        1. Visit https://meet.livekit.io and click "Start meeting"
        2. Make sure the camera is enabled and turned on. MacOS will show a green camera icon on the menubar, and the camera light will be on.
        3. Close the tab
        4. Notice the green camera icon and webcam light continue to stay on, until Orion is quit

Orion should stop using the webcam after closing the tab
