Safari (and other browsers) have a shortcut for quickly navigating to ".com" domains: Just type the domain name in the address bar and press control+return. The browser will automatically append ".com" to the domain and navigate to the site.

Not a major feature, but it's become muscle memory for me, so it would be neat to see it in Orion.

In the attached video, I type "kagi", then press control+return, and Safari navigates to kagi.com. (The keyboard viewer is just there to show the keystrokes.)

mb3 I've tried this in Safari and am not able to reproduce. If I type 'randomwebsite' and press control enter it will not send me to randomwebsite.com but to my search engine. Therefore the rule is not clear.

I think Safari does some type of domain resolution first, to see if the domain name with ".com" exists. Otherwise it requests the name as typed (perhaps in case it's a local network service?). If you try it with a domain name that exists, it should work.

Safari also seems to have a slight delay on the keyboard shortcut for some reason. That is, if you press and release control+return immediately, it may still go to a search. But if you hold control for about half a second and then press return, it should navigate to the .com.

(Chrome does not have this delay; control+return navigates to the .com immediately.)

mb3 can u send a video with you doing something like trying to go to some website that ends with .com, comparing the behavior with safari and orion, and the using ctrl-enter and just enter?

what ive noticed is that ctrl-enter, and enter just choose the first suggested result in safari

eirk Sorry this took a while. Here's a video comparing the behavior of Safari, Chrome, and Orion.

Note that in Safari, you have to hold control for a moment before hitting return. Not sure why they do that. It can also help to either use a private window or disable Siri suggestions, otherwise the autocomplete will usually fill in first for most common sites.

mb3 Please use 'randomwebsite' as entered text to demonstrate the feature

Accoring to your OP safari should redirect to randomwebsite.com which it doesnt

Sorry to resurrect this post but I have muscle memory for the same shortcuts coming from Firefox and Chromium based browsers. Safari as far as I can tell does not. In Firefox for example I can type "randomwebsite" in to the address bar and hit control+enter and it will attempt to navigate me to www.randomwebsite.com

You can see Chrome's keyboard shortcuts for this under "Address bar shortcuts" here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/157179?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop#zippy=%2Caddress-bar-shortcuts

Not a dealbreaker for my attempts to switch over to Orion full time but definitely a bit of muscle memory I keep tripping up on.

First off thanks to @Vlad and the team for implementing this. I've upgraded to Version 0.99.130-beta (WebKit 621.1.2.111.4) this morning but control+return still just acts the same as return, it just sends the string in the address bar to my default search engine. Is there an option in settings or flags that I need to enable?

Hey @Vlad It's very weird. It works on my personal machine but not on my work computer and they're using the same hardware. I'll do some more investigation and see if I can narrow down why.
