This happens despite the fact that I am using system-wide dark mode. In order for this problem to occur, Google has to be set to open links in a new tab. Neither Safari nor Firefox have this problem.
Does Safari handle this differently? I think that this is probably due to the white background you get for The Verge on that screen width
